The Dunolly Football Netball Club have made the first big splash of the 2015 off-season, signing former Melbourne forward Shaun Smith as their senior coach for 2015.
Smith, who is most fondly remembered for his “Mark of the Century” at the Gabba in 1995, played 109 games with both North Melbourne and Melbourne from 1987-1998, booting 134 goals. He continued his playing career at VFL level until 2004 with Werribee, and has spent time coaching Newlyn in the Central Highlands FL.
Smith joins a Dunolly club that won just one game, plus a draw, to finish at the foot of the Maryborough Castlemaine District FNL ladder in 2014, and who will be looking at their new coach to help lead them back up the ladder in his first year at the helm.
Smith’s appointment has already garnered a great deal of excitement and enthusiasm around Dunolly, with Smith himself looking forward to the challenge of moving the Eagles back up the ladder.
"I'm excited about the opportunity and challenge of working with a developing list and putting in place the systems within the football department for an improved and successful campaign in 2015”, Smith commented upon his appointment.
The Dunolly FNC are ecstatic about the appointment, noting that Smith’s enthusiasm and football knowledge was what made him stand out from other coaching candidates.
"We're extremely excited to have someone of Shaun's calibre heading our coaching panel for the upcoming season”, commented Dunolly’s Football Manager Jamie Townsend.
“[Shaun’s] enthusiasm towards taking the job on and knowledge of football will only hold the club in good stead and continue to assist our young developing list.”
“The excitement around the community from past players, locals and the surrounding areas has been immense, and we as a club are excited for what Shaun can bring to Dunolly Football Netball club in season 2015."
With pre-season training set to commence shortly, anyone looking to play for the Eagles in 2015, or even those wishing to help out around the club, can contact Townsend via e-mail at dunollyfnc.media@gmail.com
