MCDFNL Match Reviews – Round 14 (Week 1)
Maryborough Rovers v Talbot
Talbot has climbed to seventh place on the MCDFNL ladder courtesy of a 31-point victory over a faltering Maryborough Rovers in the opening week of the split round 14.
The Hawks overcame a half-time deficit to defeat the Magpies, 13.12 (90) to 9.15 (69), in a loss which now puts Rovers back amongst the pack of teams contending for eighth spot.
The opening term of Saturday's clash at Jubilee Oval saw both teams fighting tooth and nail for the seventh spot at stake, but it was the Magpies who entered the opening break with a slender two-point lead.
It was a similar story in the second quarter, as the Hawks and the Pies went blow-for-blow, trading goals, with Rovers managing to cling to their lead to carry a five-point buffer into half time.
However it was the Hawks who came to dominate the second half, regrouping to play more direct football and overcome the Magpies, establishing a small three-point lead by the final break. That lead was to be blown out to 31 points by the final siren, netting the Hawks their all-important fifth win of the season.
Luke Kemp continued to shine for the Hawks, booting five goals and earning best afield honours for his side, while Jordan Bux and Trent Barras also slotted two apiece for Talbot. Other standout contributors for the Hawks were Josh Sullivan, Liam Belcher and Lachlan Griffiths.
For Rovers, Richard Phillips, Karson Guareschi and Dale Larkin all snagged two goals. Brendon Hedger, Bryce Fletcher, David Popovski and Larkin were named the Pies' best.
Trentham v Harcourt
Trentham has caused one of the upsets of the 2015 MCDFNL season, with the lowly Saints upstaging Harcourt by 19 points on Saturday.
The Saints lead their opponents at every break en route to their fourth win of the year, 12.6 (78) to 8.11 (59), a loss which will no doubt have shaken Harcourt's confidence.
While both sides went goal-for-goal in the opening half, with Trentham ahead by just one point at quarter time, and two points at half time, the Saints managed to extend their lead by the final break, booting five third quarter goals to Harcourt's two to lead by 19 points, a margin they managed to maintain in the final term.
Mark Strickland enjoyed a day out in front of goal for Trentham, snaring a haul of six majors, backed up by two goals from Michael Day. Strickland, Jonathan Nadin, Lewis Bruton and James Gray were named the Saints' best in one of their most impressive performances for the year.
Chris Stone booted another four goals for the losing side, while Jeff McMurtrie, Alex Birch, Kyle McLean and Joel Smith were named Harcourt's best in a disappointing day for the Lions.
Campbells Creek v Lexton
Lexton has eclipsed Campbells Creek by 84 points, with the Tigers putting on a show of strength before finals begin.
The Tigers pushed the Creekers out of the top eight by inflicting the heavy defeat, 17.10 (112) to 4.4 (28).
Despite a slow start, which saw the Tigers leading by just 10 points at half time, Lexton gathered momentum as the game wore on, pushing the gap between the two sides to 17 points at half time. A nine-goal to three third term in favour of the Tigers blew the game apart, as Lexton ground the Creekers into the dirt, gathering a handy percentage boost in the process.
Matt Brown snagged four goals for the victors, backed up by three each from Justin Hobson and Justin White, while Jimmy Templeton, Mitch Kennedy, James Morrish and Scott Clark were named Lexton's best.
The Creekers shared goal kicking honours amongst four players, while Shannon Berriman, Daniel Klimeck, Brandon Greenwood and Josh Adamson were named Creek's standouts.
