NEW IDENTITY

Women’s football in the Central Goldfields is set to embark on a new era with a fresh identity.
The MCDFNL Lions will join forces with the Carisbrook Football Netball Club from this season onwards and will play as the Carisbrook Lions in the newly formed AFL Goldfields Women’s Football League.
The move was officially ratified by AFL Goldfields during a meeting on Wednesday night (February 22) and Carisbrook Football Netball Club president Troy Driscoll said it’s a step towards a bright future.
“The Lions have done well to get started up over the past few years, we just thought it was the right time to expand our club to offer football, netball and women’s football,” he said.
“By joining Carisbrook, the Lions now have a solid, established committee structure behind them, which should help set the Lions up as a viable club for a long time.”
While the club is changing its name, much will remain the same. The side will play in the same jumper it donned in its inaugural season and the seniors will be once again be led by Jess Kile.
Kile led the Lions to premiership glory last season and says the move to Carisbrook is a terrific opportunity for the club.
“It’s an exciting opportunity for both parties,” Kile said.
“Last year, at times it was a struggle to get people to help run the boundary, goal umpire and help with team organisation.
“By coming together as part of Carisbrook, we add another dimension to them as a club and to us as a women’s team,” Kile said.
While the prospect of playing for a Carisbrook football side may seem a strange move for those with ties to other clubs around the area, Driscoll says he hopes the team is embraced by all those wanting to play.
“We’re adopting the Lions and offering those who want to play women’s football the chance to do so. We’re excited to welcome some new faces into our community,” Driscoll said.
Kile is one player who has previous links to another club, but says she has no problems playing for the newly-formed entity.
"It’s funny to think I’ll be playing for Carisbrook after playing against them in the past when I played for Maldon in both football and netball, however I can’t wait to be aligned with a club that is in full support of women’s football and where it is going,” she said.
The Lions will be hosting a registration session at Carisbrook Recreation Reserve next Friday at 5.30 pm where a senior training session will be held at the same time.
