The Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League Senior football team has won back-to back Interleague games as they posted a hard-fought and exciting victory against Warrnambool District at Reid Oval on Saturday.
MCDFNL won the toss and kicked with a slight breezen towards the hockey field end. Warrnambool kicked the first goal of thegame through Justin Wallace; but the MCDFNL kicked the next five goals in succession to lead at quarter time by 26 points.
Ash Driscoll provided a target up forward and kicked two first quarter goals. Matt Bilton also scored a goal but was met heavily by Danny Chatfield and left the field. He returned to play a crucial role in Louis Hannet’s goal just before the siren.
The defensive pressure from both teams was at a high in the second quarter and Lachlan Slorach was used as an avenue for many of the MCDFNL’s forward ventures. Both teams found it hard to break through on the scoreboard, and it wasn’t until the 11 minute mark that Scott Judd goaled on the run for WDFNL. It was another 10 minute wait for another major score by Dylan Wilsher, and the WDFNL were within 15 points at the 22 minute mark. Ash Driscoll then sat the ball up for his brother Cody to mark and goal as the MCDFNL led at half time by 21-points.
The MCDFNL were expected to kick away with the majority of scoring coming at the hockey field end of the oval, However, the WDFNL had other ideas, as it proceeded to peg the lead back slowly and eventually hit the front at the 22 minute mark.
But a great fightback had two late goals to Ash Driscoll that gave the ascendency back to the visitors as they led at three quarter-time by 11-points.
WDFNL missed a couple of early shots, while Dylan Bourke kicked a great goal on the run to open the final quarter and to give the MCDFNL a 15-point lead.A quick reply came from Tully Alwood from the WDFNL with a snap shot from the pocket on his left foot and it was just nine-points the difference four minutes into the final term. MCDFNL responded to the late challenge and with goals to Cody Driscoll and Matthew Jules as the visitors took control of the game and finished strongly to run out winners by 28 points.
