BASKETBALL SPECIALIST COACHING CAMP

Dean Kinsman, former Head Coach of the Women’s Program at the Australian Institute of Sport, ran a series of skills sessions for Junior Lakers squad members, SA Country representatives and local coaches last Saturday and Sunday.

This outstanding Camp was made possible through the City of Mount Gambier Junior Sports Assistance Fund and the generous sponsorship of the Mount Gambier and District Community Branch of the Bendigo Bank.

All participants were unanimous in their praise of Coach Kinsman, who was seen at his best, teaching and inspiring the junior basketballers as he presented drills and strategies related to game situations. One of the main features of his sessions was the way in which he encouraged players to think about and gain an understanding of the game from a team perspective.

He also presented some new ideas and techniques, which will keep local coaches up to date with current trends.

His teachings are based on the premise that the better players master the fundamentals of the game the more they enjoy playing.

Kinsman noted the overall improvement in the groups since his previous visit in September. He was also impressed with the enthusiasm and application of the players and made special mention of the Under 14 Girls group. Trevor Semmens, Mount Gambier’s Junior Development Officer, also praised this group and indicated their progress is due in part to their commitment to the weekly Junior Development Program.

The Camp has been rated as most successful in all aspects of player and coach development. A measure of this success is reflected in the many positive comments from coaches, parents and players alike along with requests for further such Camps.

Basketball Mount Gambier is keen to have Kinsman conduct Basketball Camps in Mount Gambier on a regular basis following the unqualified success of the weekend.
