BUSY BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT SEASON

Basketball Mount Gambier Junior and Senior representative teams are lining up to a busy next few weeks, participating in Tournaments.

The Senior Men and Women Lakers’ teams travel to Adelaide this weekend to compete in the annual SA Country Basketball Senior Championships. While overall numbers are low in terms of nominations, the high quality of players has been maintained.

Simon Berkefeld is in charge of the Men and Sonia Bawden, the Women, both taking on demanding player coaching roles.

The Men’s A Grade competition appears even especially this year with last year’s winning Association Eastern Hills nominating two teams. The Lakers will be challenged in each game of the minor round when they meet Eastern Hills White, Port Augusta and Riverland.

Teams in the other Pool are Eastern Hills Blue, Murray Bridge, Port Pirie and Strathalbyn.

The Lakers face a huge weekend of basketball. They will play all teams in the seven team A Grade competition before a Grand Final between the top two ranked teams. Yorke Valley, Port Pirie, Port Augusta, Strathalbyn and Great Southern have a wealth of talented young players, who will all be strong contributors for their Associations. The Lakers teams each have several CBL players in their line-ups. These players will be suiting up for CBL semi-finals on January 31st and February 1st.

The Championships are being played over Saturday and Sunday morning followed by Grand Finals later in the afternoon.

The Lakers’ Under 18 Women under Coach Bryan Green are seeking new challenges this coming weekend. They are competing in the Skin, Ski N Surf Junior Basketball Classic at Bendigo. Coach Green has guided the Lakers to comfortable wins in regional junior tournaments and has thrown out a challenge to his players to compete in one of the best junior tournaments nationwide. Teams the Lakers will meet in their minor round games are Swan Hill Flyers in their first game at 11.20 am on Saturday, followed by Wangaratta Warriors, Sunbury Jets and Wodonga Wolves.

Three of the Lakers’ Junior representative teams are heading to Hamilton this weekend to play in the annual Junior Tournament. These teams are Under 12 Girls, coached by Steve Reid, Under 14 Boys Division 2 with Peter Cunningham in charge and the Under 18 Boys Division 2 side, under the guidance of Troy Bird.

The Tournament will run over two days of the long weekend starting on Saturday morning and concluding with finals on Sunday afternoon.
