Canterbury won the toss and from the tap off, #6 created space and threw a long ball to #9 who got them off to a perfect start. Bay of Plenty attacked back but the Canterbury defence was too good and they regained possession. They extended their lead when #6 threw another long ball for #10 and then again when #4 scooped from dummy and ran a cut with #5 for a 3-0 lead.
Bay of Plenty’s #16 finally got his team on the board when he sneaked through a gap to score and start the Bay of Plenty comeback. Canterbury though had other ideas and in no time had extended their lead after #10 scored on the back of good work from #8. Canterbury followed this up with #5 running into a hole and faking a long ball dummy and diving over for a try. Their lead hit 6-1 when #4 scooped the ball and passed long for #10’s second try before half time.
Bay of Plenty started the second half positively, when #6 dumps splits and received the ball to dive over for a fine try. They followed this up with another try when #16 created space passed to #10 to make the score 6-3.
But Bay of Plenty left their run too late as Canterbury put on the last try for the day and win the Grand Final with #6 dotting down for the last score and a 7-3 result.
