FOLLOWING last Saturday’s clashes in Round 3 of the GRFC’s Women’s Division 1 competition, Deakin Ducks have rocketted off to a great start finding themselves three points ahead of all the following teams.

At Deakin’s synthetic pitch in waurn Ponds, Deakin hosted Kardinia International College in a game which looked very hopeful for Kardinia. Hannah Gordon one of Deakin’s strong goalscorers sealed a goal for Deakin in the 9^th minute to put the home side a head, however this was very closely followed three minutes later with another goal from Andrea Thornton for the Ducks.

Things looked dull for the visiting Kardinia side until a glimmer of hope from Caelli Wood saw the Students walk off at half time with the result being 2-1. The next 40 minutes of soccer saw Kardinia fighting for a second goal to get them back in the game but it was shut down by Madeleine Lee Gow to end the game in a 3-1 result favoring the home side.

Surfside Waves team won the Battle of the Neighbours overcoming Drysdale at Howard Glover Reserve. The Drysdale team was disappointed with their result and agreed to vastly improve in their next game. Steffi Wallace and Alexis Pearson both got their first goals for the season getting singles a piece to win the game.

The weekend’s final game was at Stead Park Reserve, where Geelong SC was beaten by a stronger Barwon side in a similar score line to the Drysdale-Surfside game. The Geelong outfit was not ready for Laura Fitzpatrick who scored a brace for Barwon to give them their first win for the season. Barwon now sits just above Kardinia while Geelong struggle to get points on the board.
