NEWS: GRFC Men's Division One - Round 4 Report

ROUND Four of the GRFC Men’s Division 1 saw the match between the Elcho Park Cardinals and Drysdale abandoned after a Cardinals’ player suffered a serious leg injury in the 25th minute with Drysdale leading 3-0.

In the Sunday afternoon clash at Howard Glover Reserve, Drysdale hosted bottom of the ladder Elcho Park Cardinals which from the start looked like an easy win for Drysdale, scoring three goals in the first 22 minutes.

After taking on a few players, Cardinals player Ivan Balta tripped and fell, which resulted in an horrific broken leg right in the middle of the pitch. Being a serious injury, the referee made the correct call not to move him and an ambulance was called.

The goal scorers for Drysdale included Danny Graham, Daniel Hegarty and Rhys Clapp with drysdale in a commanding lead at the time of the abandonment. This fixture will most likely be replayed at a later date.

The pick of the other games was Deakin Green v Deakin Black, which ended in a 3-1 win for Deakin Green. Deakin Black opened the scoring with Thomas Shaw putting a goal in the back of the net. After being on the chase, Deakin Black Green scored three goals before full time with the three individual goal scorers beingKaman Dhillon, Sainesh Kissun and David Marshall.

The most one sided result from the weekend was 9-0, in the ‘intra-club’ clash between Barwon Blue and Barwon Red at Grovedale Reserve. Sitting second on the ladder, Barwon Red annihilated bottom of the ladder Barwon Blue. Sean Mahon played an extraordinary game netting six goals for his team, putting him on eight in total for the season. He was aided by Jonathon Perez, Liam Fiolet and Ian Nichols who all got singles apiece to close out the win.

Over at the White Eagle House in Breakwater, Breakwater Eagles hosted Surfside Waves in a 1-1 affair that looked dominant towards the visiting team that just failed to close out their shots. Jack Pedler got another goal on the scoresheet for himself, putting him on four for the season, while Matthew Elsen scored for the home team.

Over in Barwon Heads, Surf Coast visited the home team Barwon Heads and came away with a point following a 3-3 stalemate. Benjamin Kelly scored a brace for the home team which was followed by Andrew Marriott with a single. The three individual goal scorers for Surf Coast were David Baker, David Cattigan and Scott James.

Geelong Rangers and Geelong SC’s high scoring game ended in a 6-4 result for Geelong SC, which saw Geelong jump to 5th spot on the ladder, while last year’s champions Rangers now occupy 10th spot. The goalscorers for the victors were: Arijan Veljan, Zoran Talevski, Amritpal Singh Chhina, Jamie Heaton, Steven Ginoski and Christopher Bocchicchio.

At the other end of the pitch, Scott Davison scored a brace for Rangers, while Josh Bertucci, and Keiran Robinson both scored singles apiece.

The final game of the weekend saw Deakin Gold face off against Bell Park which ended in a dominant 6-1 win to the top of the ladder Deakin outfit. Troy Harrison opened the goal scoring in the 21st minute that also opened the gate for Harry Woolley to nail four consecutive goals. The final goalscorer for Deakin was Kyle Cushion getting a single. At the other half of the pitch, Abdullah Onturk netted a consolation goal.
