ROUND 9 of the Geelong Region Men’s Division 1 competition is set to be played over the upcoming weekend, with Surfside Waves and Barwon Heads kicking off proceedings tonight at Shell Road Reserve in Ocean Grove.

Surfside will be looking to bounce back from its poor result last round after being defeated 1-0 at the hands of Surf Coast. The loss saw the Waves surrender second spot on the ladder. Barwon Heads, meanwhile, will have some confidence amongst the team after the Hammerheads came away with an emphatic 5-1 win over Breakwater last weekend.

Currently, Surfside sits in 3rd spot with 15 point and only trails second placed Deakin Ducks on goal difference. Barwon Heads is at the other end of the table in 8th position, with seven points, just two points behind Lara.

Lara United hosts Surf Coast at the Lara Recreation Reserve on Sunday. Lara has struggled in recent weeks while Surf Coast have managed to leapfrog United after last week’s round.

Currently as the table stands, Surf Coast are 4th with 12 points. However, the three teams below them each have a game in hand.

Lara is in 8th position on the table with nine points and will be hoping to bounce back after being defeated 5-2 by the Deakin Ducks last week.

Following the cancellation of its game last week due to a washout, Drysdale SC is back in action this weekend when it hits the road to take on the Breakwater Eagles at White Eagle House. Bottom side Breakwater was defeated 5-1 last round is still yet to win a game this season.

Drysdale is in 6th spot on the table, just two points behind Surf Coast, and also has a game in hand. Breakwater remains in last position on the table with a solitary competition point.

Across town at Hume Reserve, Corio will take on the high flying Deakin Ducks. Deakin comes into this game on the back of a 5-2 win over Lara United last round, while Corio’s game last week was cancelled due to the inclement weather.

Deakin is 2nd on the table, just in front of Surfside on goal difference. Corio, in the meantime, is four points behind Deakin in 5th spot on the table. The Eagles also have a game in hand on Surf Coast, Surfside and Deakin.

To conclude the round, the so far unstoppable Geelong Rangers will host 7th placed Barwon in last year’s Grand Final replay at Myers Reserve on Sunday.

No one has managed to stop the Rangers so far this season, they have won all their games so far this season and have a game in hand. They are currently 6 points ahead of 2nd place.

Barwon, which has a much weakened side than last year due to the inclusion of its two top ranked Senior teams in the FFV State League 5 competition, currently has 10 points so far this season and is five points behind Deakin and Surfside.

It will be a tough game indeed for the Blue and Whites, however, as no one has managed to defeated Rangers so far this season.
