Tigers survive in finals fight

There was room for only one Cobram team in Goulburn North East Football Association finals, and it was Cobram that prevailed on Sunday.

Not even a home advantage could get Cobram Victory home against the Tigers, who advanced to the preliminary final courtesy of a 1-0 win.

Darcey Read proved the difference with a tremendous solo effort.

Picking up the ball high up the pitch, Read went on a mazy run and eventually found the back of the net with a well-placed shot, scoring at the front post.

The overall game was a tight one and the Tigers had to rely on goalkeeper Christina Kalz to make a number of saves, while Jess Gannaway also impressed, despite playing with an ankle injury.

Tigers coach and senior men’s goalkeeper Jack Dovey was delighted with the effort.

‘‘It was a very tight game and fairly equal I’d say,’’ Dovey said.

‘‘They had a couple of chances from through balls, but Chrissy was on top of it and made some good saves.

‘‘The girls battled really hard all day and the defence was really strong against a side that has been very good this year.’’

The Tiger can look forward to taking on the loser of this weekend’s second semi-final between Shepparton and Shepparton South in two weeks’ time.
