Suns earn point with strong performance

Goulburn Valley Suns’ under-20 side continued its promising start to its inaugural National Premier Leagues Victoria campaign with a 0-0 draw against Heidelberg United.

The point registered from the result is the first official point the Suns have registered as a club in the NPLV, after last week’s game against Ballarat Red Devils was abandoned with the Suns 3-1 up following the broken leg suffered by 16-year-old Jake Francis.

The Suns were unlucky not to take all three points after putting in a strong performance and dominating possession for the majority of the game, coach Serkan Aktas said.

‘‘Apart from scoring a goal, we dominated the game from start to finish,’’ Aktas said.

‘‘The boys are fantastic, everything we worked on in training was all coming off on the park, but we just couldn’t put it away.

‘‘We hit the post and we had a couple of goals ruled out as well.’’

Aktas said he believed Ramah Taya was unlucky to have a goal scratched off after the linesman flagged for a player he believed was in a passive offside position, but said the officials otherwise had good games.

Aktas was also pleased to have the experience and talent of Rossi Lagana in his side as an overage player.

Lagana made his first bid for senior action in the coming weeks since signing for the club last month and impressed with a mature and composed display.

‘‘He’s short on match practice, but he was out there organising and using his experience to help the boys. It was like having a second coach out there,’’ Aktas said.

‘‘I’ve played with him before and we know how good he is, so I think he’ll start pushing for seniors.’’

As the game progressed and Abdullah Wahidi tired, the game became a little scrappier as the Suns went more direct in search of the vital goal they needed, but it wasn’t to be.

In spite of that, Aktas is delighted with the progress he is seeing week to week from his fledgling side.

‘‘We’re coming along and progressing really well,’’ Aktas said.

‘‘The boys are taking to everything at training really well.’’
