Call for closer mentor course

Goulburn Valley Suns junior technical director Pat Kielty suggested it would be good if Football Federation Victoria could offer a block, intensive coaching course for coaches in the wider area.

As it stands, coaches need to travel to Melbourne to complete the course over two blocks of three and two weeks.

Each block is spread out so that coaches are required at Darebin International Sports Centre in Melbourne on Saturdays and Sundays to participate in course sessions.

The next course will require candidates to spend Saturdays and Sundays in Melbourne over five spare weekends between July and September.

Jolic said a minimum of 24 coaches would be required for that to happen, not including players to run sessions with.

“I think if we went to wider regional areas such as Wangaratta and Cobram we could muster those numbers,” Kielty said.

Suns junior coach David Davkovski is doing he course this year and is fully aware of the commitment he is undertaking, but believes FFV is doing the best it can.

“I think people are quick to blame them, but they’re doing a fantastic job,” Davkovski said.

“If you want to be a good coach, then you just do what you have to do.”
