Goulburn Valley Suns secured a much-needed National Premier Leagues Victoria point from the most unlikely of places — South Melbourne’s Lakeside Stadium.
When top plays bottom, there is usually only one outcome, but the Suns bucked the trend with a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon.
The Suns had fantastic rearguard action — and a perfectly timed counter attack — to thank for the result, with coach Peter Zois delighted with his side’s discipline and controlled aggression in defence.
‘‘Each and every one of the players stood up and decided that this wasn’t going to be a walkover (for South Melbourne),’’ Zois said.
‘‘There were so many good examples of the players’ character. Zac (Paraskevas) lasted 70 minutes, but he gave us everything he had.
‘‘He couldn’t give me any more and was ready to come off, but before we could get him off he had to make an important clearance with his head and without that we would have conceded another, but I can’t single anyone out, because everyone played well.’’
The match did not get off to the best start, with Tyson Holmes scoring a spectacular goal in the 10th minute, but the Suns gathered themselves quickly and although Hellas ca me close on a number of occasions, the Suns’ goal would not be breached again.
