Hastie follows Suns

Shepparton News

Former Shepparton City president and secretary John Hastie said he was keenly following the fortunes of Goulburn Valley Suns, as were former City players Harry Vasterink — who was at the club from beginning until end — and Dennis Macauley.

‘‘We tried what they’re doing 40 years ago, and we hope they’re successful,’’ Hastie said.

Macauley said the Suns needed to be careful with how much it spent on out-of-town players, a costly lesson for Shepparton City in the early ’80s.

‘‘They’re already panicking (after winning one and drawing two from 14 games) and they’re sigining players like crazy,’’ Macauley said.

‘‘How much are they going to pay (Simon) Colosimo? It’s crazy.

‘‘You can’t have a whole team like that. Maybe you have two or three, but not a whole team, it’s not sustainable.’’

Hastie said the club should be about its juniors and believed the junior structures should serve as a pathway to the senior team.

‘‘The Suns’ success will come down to whether or not there is a pathway to the seniors,’’ Hastie said.

‘‘Local talent brings local people and if you haven’t got that, you haven’t got anything.’’
