Pride all that’s left to claim for Suns

With relegation confirmed, Goulburn Valley Suns only have pride to play for as they continue the rebuild ahead of next season.

The Suns travel to Knights Stadium tomorrow to take on Melbourne Knights.

Senior coach David Davkovski said the past two weeks had been challenging for the team after a period of resurgence, but said he would not be making too many changes to the team that lost 3-0 to Pascoe Vale last week.

‘‘We just use what we’ve got as we have all along, and we just want to keep giving some of the younger boys a run,’’ Davkovski said.

However, the stocks of younger talent might be tested this week after the Suns’ under-20 side was forced to play a midweek fixture in Melbourne against Port Melbourne, after the game was originally postponed due to the referees’ controversial judgment the pitch was not fit to play on in round 17.

The depleted Suns lost 2-1 and some face a race to recover ahead of tomorrow’s senior fixture.

‘‘I’ve had good contact with Serkan (Aktas, under-20 coach) and he said a few of the younger boys played really well, so we’ll just make sure they’re fit,’’ Davkovski said.

‘‘‘Serks’ has done a massive job with the 20s given so many players struggle to get to training.’’

The Suns drew 1-1 with the Knights less than a month ago and Davkovski wants his players to try and take some of the positives from that night into tomorrow’s game.

‘‘As much as the last two weeks have been tough, I have to say the boys have done nothing but show professionalism,’’ Davkovski said.

‘‘We still need to be implementing our philosophy and moving forward as a club and that helps for next year.’’
