Time to lock in players

Goulburn Valley Suns will begin discussions with players ahead of the new season during the next seven days.

The Suns have advertised for all coaching positions, including the senior role David Davkovski stepped into following the resignation of Peter Zois, but will look to start signing up players for next season even without a firm decision being made on the senior coach.

Goulburn Valley Suns chairman Michael Crisera said the board would sit down after September 15 to look at applications and begin the interviewing process.

Of the Melbourne-based players, Bryan Vanega is thought to be a priority after a string of impressive performances since signing for the club in the mid-season transfer window.

Vanega ticks a number of boxes for the club as well, given he has Football Federation Australia B-licence coaching accreditation.

Davkovski confirmed he wants the job and said the club would look to start dialogue with players regarding next season.

‘‘No-one has committed yet, but we will be talking in the next seven days,’’ Davkovski said.

‘‘We want to start tying up the players we want for next year.

‘‘We’ve got two games left this season — including a big game against South Melbourne who might need to win to win the title, in Shepparton — so I encourage everyone in the community to get down and support the club.’’

The Suns will be playing in the second tier of National Premier Leagues Victoria — NPL1 — next year, although rumours emanating from Melbourne persist the Suns will retain their top-tier status as part of a league restructure.

A Football Federation Victoria spokesperson rejected the rumours yesterday.

The Suns lost 4-1 on Saturday night against Hume City, but put in a good performance regardless of the result.

‘‘It was a good match up until the red card (to Ben Clarke for a second yellow card) and as I’ve said, I’m more concerned with performances than results,’’ Davkovski said.

‘‘A penalty and a red card in the space of five minutes changed the game, and the red card was pretty hard to take . . . but maybe we need to learn to play with 10 men.’’
