Goulburn Valley Suns will be down one star next season.
Ben Clarke was one of the Suns’ standout players last season, but the fledgling club will have to make do without their star import next season as they look to make a return to the top flight.
Clarke signed a deal with National Premier Leagues Victoria top-tier outfit Oakleigh Cannons last Tuesday.
‘‘As soon as the season finished, I got contacted by every club barring three in the top flight,’’ Clarke said.
‘‘Oakleigh offered me the best deal, but they’re also a club with high ambitions.’’
Clarke arrived in Shepparton to play in the Regional premier League with Shepparton United in July 2011 and has been a mainstay on the Shepparton soccer scene since.
He was arguably the Suns’ best player last season, with his constant threat down the flanks one of the club’s best assets on the park, finishing the season with four goals.
He said he would be leaving the town and the Suns with a heavy heart.
‘‘I’ve had a brilliant experience in Shepparton. Jimmy Kalafatis has taken such good care of me and Nick Kalafatis has been amazing for me as well,’’ Clarke said.
‘‘Everyone I know up there has been a great support and they’ll be my friends for life. It’s like home now.
