A farcical brawl marred Tatura's second win in as many years in North Eastern Soccer League yesterday as fans halted a match at McEwen Reserve.

More than 50 spectators at the match between Tatura and Shepparton South spilled onto the field in the dying stages of the men's division one game in a sea of wrestling, punching and kicking.

Police were called to McEwen Reserve but arrived at the ground after the end of the match when the crowd had dispersed.

Trouble among the spectators started on the outer side of the soccer pitch during a late delay in play as Shepparton South player Khan Aktas received treatment for an injury from trainers.

After an initial exchange of words among fans on the outer side it appeared trouble had been averted as players set up to resume play.

However, a second wind of activity spilled onto the field, some spectators chased onto the park as they tried to escape the altercation.

Players and coaches from both Shepparton South and Tatura watched on in dismay as the unruly fans refused to back down and end the mayhem.

The final two minutes of play were completed after five minutes of match officials and spectators alike trying to segregate trouble-makers and usher them from the playing arena.

League president Frank Trimboli was at McEwen Reserve and witnessed the incident.

``Both clubs will be called in front of the league for a please explain,'' Trimboli said.

``The clubs should have had match officials on both sides of the field.''

Senior Constable Robert Slee said no fans at the game had complained to police.

``Nobody has come forward, but we are ready to hear any information from the public about today's incident,'' Sen Const Slee said.
