WARRAGUL PULLS RUG OUT FROM UNDER ROAR

Shepparton News – Matthew Galea

Cobram Roar’s FFA Cup run was dealt a fatal blow at Apex Reserve on Saturday.

Warragul United showed why it plays State League Two soccer in Football Federation Victoria’s metropolitan leagues as it upstaged the Roar in a 5-0 win.

The result ends the Roar’s cup run in the third round of the Victorian preliminaries, following wins against Glen Waverley in the qualifying round, St Kevin’s Old Boys in round one and a forfeit from Dandenong City in round two.

United found itself 3-0 up before half-time and finished the job in the second half with two goals.

Cobram did score a goal to level the scores at 1-1, but it was quickly ruled out for offside.

It proved of little consequence in the end as Warragul romped to victory to progress to the fourth round, where it will take on secondtier National Premier Leagues Victoria outfit Moreland Zebras.

While the Roar exits the competition, the Goulburn Valley retains a spot in the cup through its own NPLV1 club, the Goulburn Valley Suns.

With NPLV clubs entering the cup in the fourth round, FFA Cup soccer returns to the GV when the Suns host another NPLV club Whittlesea Ranges on Saturday night.

The match is scheduled for a 7.30 pm kickoff at McEwen Reserve, although that time will need to be confirmed by FFV and Whittlesea.

The Ranges boast a former GV Sun in their ranks in Rudi Saglam, who was an 11th-hour signing on the eve of the Suns’ inaugural season last year.
