Shepparton News

Former Shepparton South player Frankie Lagana is on trial with A-League club Central Coast Mariners.

Lagana, currently playing in the Victorian premier league with Oakleigh Cannons, played 73 minutes for the Gosford-based team as it defeated Newcastle 3-0 in a pre-season match at the weekend.

The midfielder caught the attention of the A-League outfit after scoring 10 goals for Oakleigh this season.

The Mariners' next pre-season game will be against Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand on July 20.

Victory in a thriller

Cobram Victory twice came from behind to defeat Shepparton South 3-2 in North Eastern Soccer League at McEwen Reserve on Sunday.

The win kept Victory top of the table on 37 points, one ahead of Shepparton, which collected three points for the bye.

Brendan Barton's shot on the turn had South in front in the first half before a host of chances for 2-0 went begging for the Southerners.

Nazz Santoro equalised from the last touch of the first half after knocking in a corner, only for Barton to score his second and put South ahead in the second half.

A red card for South's Connor Campbell would cost it dearly after he was shown two yellow cards, the second for encroachment after running off a defensive wall.

Two goals to Joey Crea turned the contest in Victory's favour, giving it a third straight win since defeat to Shepparton in round 10.

Cobram romps in

Cobram held third position on the women's ladder after a comfortable 7-0 win against Kyabram.

Shepparton United also shored up its top spot as it knocked Tatura from second place down to fourth with a 3-0 win.

Jess Theobald with two goals and Megan Carr with one were the scorers for United.

Cobram is third on 26 points, one below Shepparton and one above Tatura.

The Tigers led 3-0 at half-time against Kyabram thanks to goals from Bianca Dikkenberg, Angela Hogan and Tania Doyle.

Doyle completed her hat-trick with two more goals in the second half, while Jane Thatcher rounded out the scoring with two goals of her own.

Vipers suffer blow

Finals hopes for the three North Eastern Soccer League players in the women's state league suffered a blow at the weekend as Bendigo Vipers fell off the pace with a 2-0 defeat to Ashburton.

Tatura duo Derya Tanrikulu and Sophie Findlay, Cobram's Jacinta Dikkenberg and former Shepparton South player Angela Foley all played for Bendigo in the defeat.

The loss means the Vipers on 18 points are now seven off the pace of sixth-placed Heidelberg United.

Tatura's Lucy Ciancio made her first Vipers appearance at the weekend in the reserves.
