Goulburn Valley Suns senior coach Peter Zois has handed in his resignation.
Zois was appointed head coach two months ago , but stepped down following Sunday night’s 5-0 National Premier Leagues Victoria defeat to Heidelberg United — his seventh loss in nine games at the helm.
Zois was the Suns’ second senior coach in their first season, after inaugural technical director and senior coach Melvyn Wilkes.
The ex-Melbourne Heart goalkeeper’s reign at the club procured just two points — including an impressive 1-1 draw at South Melbourne — with Zois’ Suns conceding 27 goals in nine games and scoring just five.
Zois said he knew he would be judged by his results and he was disappointed not to be able to turn the fledgling club’s fortunes around.
‘‘We tried to work through a certain way and it didn’t go the way we planned,’’ Zois said.
‘‘I want to thank the club for the opportunity, but I’m disappointed I was unable to get more results because, as coach, that’s what we’re judged on and it’s clear the results weren’t good.
‘‘I was going to meet with the club on Wednesday, but I thought I should resign now and give them more time to find a coach ahead of a winnable game (against Port Melbourne) next weekend.’’
