Inglewood edge out youthful Glory

The only goal of the game came in the 15th minute, where a long throw by Adam Tong allowed Kenny Keogh to find enough space to volley home past keeper Jordan Thurtell.

Whilst Glory had a lot of the ball, Inglewood’s impressive defensive discipline meant that Glory barely had chances, especially in a second half where Inglewood were happy sitting deep.

It could have easily been two if not for good saves by Thurtell in the 60th and 62nd minute, denying Mark Pritchard and Jason Colli respectively.

Thurtell was also at his best to deny an 86th minute shot by Inglewood captain David Cyrus, palming his stinging effort around a post.

Inglewood coach Taki Nicolaidis was impressed with his team today as they grabbed another three points to be equal top of the ladder.

“It wasn’t a pretty game from our point but it was effective,” Nicolaidis said.

“We took our chance in the first half and in the second half we defended very well and made it difficult for them to create goal scoring chances.”

However Nicolaidis was unwilling to get carried away despite the perfect start to the season.

“For me I don’t look at a 100 percent record or anything, the expectation was to get off to a good start.

“Now we’re three from three against a quality Glory team and Floreat Athena, who were one of the better teams last year, to come away with nine points from three games is good.

“We will celebrate todays win and look forward to the game next week against Bayswater.”

It could have been a different game if Glory had scored in the seventh minute however, Alex Tanevski was presented with an easy chance to score but shot high and wide in a disappointing moment for home fans.

It then turned into a horror day for Tanevski as he was stretchered off the field with a suspected broken arm in the 19th minute.

Perth Glory coach John Gibson said that moment probably shook his players up, but made no excuses for their lack of quality in the final third.

“We’ve got to be better and we know that,” Gibson said.

“We’ll work on things during the week…...the front third was difficult for us today, we need to be better in that area particularly the final ball.”

Next week, Inglewood face champions Bayswater City in a cracking match at Finance 365 Stadium, while Glory host Sorrento.
