On the back of the success of its boys AFL Academy Hallam Senior College, which was established in
2006, Hallam has established this year the first ever AFL Girls Academy in a Secondary School in the
Outer Southern Region of Victoria.
The Year 11 girls undertake Certificate 2 in Sport & Recreation as part
of their assessment towards the units of competency they are running the first
ever Auskick clinics for primary school girls delivered by secondary year girls
in Victoria.
The program is being run at Maramba Primary
School to the Grade 4 girls each Thursday afternoon for all of Term 2, with the
Hallam girls bussed out to the primary school and conduct a 45 minute clinic,
where the junior girls are taught the skills of AFL and finish with a game each
week which is all planned, delivered and assessed by the Year 11 girls.
Already in the first session Maramba P.E.
teacher Scott Hunter commented on “how
great it was to see all his girls competing in an environment that they did not
feel intimidated by the boys and having so much fun”. Hallam Senior College girls AFL
Coach Brett Alexander said “he was
delighted by the enthusiasm his girls showed in conducting the clinic and how
the girls saw themselves as positive role models for the younger primary school
students”.
Maramba Primary School is an in-school Auskick program which is one of 54 Auskick centres
that operate in the Outer Southern Peninsula Region for AFL Victoria. Last year
the program saw 5250 children (aged 5-12) participate in Auskick for a minimum
of 16 weeks a year.
