All 80 AFL Brisbane Juniors’ umpires will don pink socks over the Mother’s Day Weekend, May 5 to 8 in support of the McGrath Foundation, AFL Brisbane Juniors chosen charity to support in 2016.
Money raised will help fund McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities across Australia and increase breast awareness in young women.
Event organiser and Junior Umpiring Group member, Samantha Ramsay said Mother’s Day was the perfect fit for AFL Brisbane Juniors Umpiring Group’s fundraiser.
“Mother’s Day is all about celebrating women and what better way to do this than by turning pink in support of an issue which is real for many of these women,” said Ramsay
“With one in every eight women diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 85, there is no better way to show our appreciation; not just for our own mothers, but for all the mothers and wonderful female volunteers and their families who are involved in junior AFL in Brisbane and may have been affected by this disease.”
Ramsay said the community can get involved by sponsoring the efforts of the young umpires or coming down to their local football ground to watch a junior game.
“You’ll see a member of our group out their proudly representing this valuable organisation in our pink socks - we should all look great,” she said.
McGrath Foundation Ambassador and Director, Tracy Bevan, says the McGrath Foundation continues to be blown away by the support from Australian communities, which goes a long way in helping the Foundation towards its mission to ensure every family in Australia experiencing breast cancer has access to a breast care nurse no matter where they live or their financial situation.
“We are proud to have funded over 110 McGrath Breast Care Nurses working nationally who, together, have supported over 40,0000 families experiencing breast cancer. Events like this are truly helping us to make a difference,” Tracy said.
