The Eagles are primed to create history next week when they take on the reigning premiers in the 2011 CAFL Grand Final. In the last game of the round robin fixture, the young and spirited Eagles proved too quick and too strong for the Christchurch Bulldogs. The upcoming final will likely be a more even contest than the game today which saw tee Eagles win by 19-points. The rivalry between the two teams has been fierce this year since the transfer of two of the Bulldogs star players, Steve Howard and Matt Crighton, to the Eagles during the off-season.
The second game of the afternoon proved to be a dead rubber as the places for the grand final had been decided after the first game, but nobody told the Blues, or so it seemed. They played as if their lives depended on winning, while the Cougars, missing some of their better players were never in the hunt. The difference in morale between the two camps could not have been greater and it was a sad end to the Cougars who seemed at the mid-way of the season to be the challengers to the Bulldogs. Full credit to the Blues, who have been steadily building over the past few weeks and it wouldn't be surprising to see them take third spot at the end of the season.
