Canterbury might be a small province population wise by New Zealand standards, but in the AFL at least, the addage "quality is better than quantity" holds true. Ever since their shock win in the 2010 NPC, the last held in Christchurch, they have been the hunted. No longer the minnows of AFL in New Zealand, the Cobras can stand along side sporting greats such as the Crusaders and Canterbury (Rugby), as proud bearers of the Red and Black. They have won their last two tournaments away from home, beating Wellington and Auckland on their home turf.
The side has lost some talent, to be sure, from their 2012 team, but import Paddy Smith and the return of James Bowden will compensate. Also returning from Australia for the tournament, are Aussie based Alban Beaumont and James Stevenson, who will add their honed skills to the team. Youngsters Kyle Smith, Alex Frew, Josh Robles McGill, Sean Butler and Levi Ingliss are emerging talent that are likely to impress.
The first game of the weekend kicks off at 1 PM on Saturday and will see the Cobras take on the Otago Riot.
On Sunday, Canterbury play back to back games against Wellington and Auckland, with the first at 11:30 AM. Show your support by getting to the ground over the weekend.
The team will be captained by veteran Todd Andrews, with Wayne Sullivan in support as deputy and Assistant Coach. Manager Jason Beck is keeping the lads under control and Coach Harry Peterson is bound to get the best out of the team.
Emergency Noah Whitehead is ready to come into the team at the drop of a hat and will also act as medico for the team. CAFL VP, Anthony (Guido) Johnson is there to assist with strapping duties, alongside Noah and Jason.
