Women’s football in the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football & Netball League is set to expand in 2016, with the introduction of two new female teams in the new year.
After the success of the MCDFNL’s Youth Girls team since its formation in 2014, including a Preliminary Final appearance in the Ballarat FNL’s Youth Girls competition in 2015, the club has expanded to form an open-aged Women’s team and an Under 12 Junior Girls team for the 2016 season.
Whilst the Youth Girls and Junior Girls teams will compete in the Ballarat FNL’s competitions, the Women’s team will seek admission into the recently-announced regional Open-aged Women’s Competition in the AFL Goldfields region, which will compete in the Victorian Women’s Football League.
Recruiting has already started for the open-aged version of the MCDFNL Lions, with Jessica Kile appointed as its inaugural coach.
Kile, who has played with the Bendigo Thunder in the VWFL in recent years and who has also played state-level cricket, has already indicated the availability of a number of open-aged players for next season, augmenting the players that have graduated from the Youth Girls side over the past few years, which has pleased co-ordinator Brandon Weatherson.
“We are ecstatic to secure Jess who has a fantastic football background and brain and look forward to her working with our new team” Weatherson commented.
“Two seasons ago there was no female football in Maryborough and to now have three teams indicates we are doing something right.”
The MCDFNL Lions Women’s Football Club will be holding a “Meet The Coaches” night on Wednesday 16th December at 5.30 at Jubilee Oval encompassing all three teams with all current and prospective players and supporters encouraged to attend. Those wishing to attend are advised to wear training gear and runners/sneakers.
Following a light training session there will be an information session that will outline season 2016, with food and drinks available at a small cost.
