Wedderburn v Charlton
Wedderburn and Charlton both struggled to gain any advantage in the early part of the
opening term with both sides defences under plenty of pressure and neither side was
stepping back in the contest. Wedderburn broke the deadlock after ten minutes of play
when Herdman kicked the Redbacks first major score. Charlton sent the ball into their
attacking zone many times, but their efforts were either turned back by the Wedderburn
defence or their shots at goal only brought up minor scores. At the first change the
Redbacks held a fourteen point lead with Herdman and Tonkin being the goal kickers;
Charlton could only manage the five points in the quarter.
In the second quarter there was only two goals kicked with Wedderburn’s Barnes being
the only goal scorer for the term. Charlton continued with their inaccuracy and by half
time they were yet to register a major score with their half time score being nine points
and they trailed by twenty six points at half time. Cam Perry and Mark Lloyd were both
big contributors for the Redbacks while Ben Walklate and Luke Kyriakides being better
players for the Navy Blues.
Charlton came out a different side after the break but were still finding it hard to score;
finally Kyriakides broke through and registered their first goal of the game at the ten
minute mark of the third term. Thompson who had been moved to the forward line
for the Navy Blues kicked their second goal within thirty seconds of their first as they
looked to get themselves back into the game. Wedderburn reloaded with Tonkin and
Barnes countering the Navy Blues scoring with goals to retain their hold on the game.
Thompson was again in the action for Charlton and posted his second goal for the term
before the Redbacks answered through Strange to give Wedderburn a twenty eight point
lead heading towards three quarter time. Charlton made one last attempt to reduce the
Redbacks lead and give themselves a fighting chance in the final term and they were
rewarded for their effort when Thompson again marked strongly and kicked his third goal
for the quarter to reduce the Redbacks lead back to twenty two points at the last change.
Wedderburn set about increasing their lead with Barnes bringing up his fourth goal and
ninety eighth for the season just two minutes into the final term but his hundredth goal
for the year would not eventuate as there was only one more goal scored between the
two sides with that being kicked by Wedderburn’s Will Chalmers. Charlton could only
add a further two points to their score of the first three terms to finish the day thirty nine
points in arrears of the Wedderburn Redbacks. Charlton now has one last chance to win
their way into the 2014 Grand Finals in next week’s preliminary final against St Arnaud.
Wedderburn who has been the league leader all year has earned the weeks rest before
lining up for their fourth grand final in a row and a chance to create league history if
they can win their fourth consecutive premiership, something that no side has done in the
history of the North Central Football league.
