Strathdale 2014 Champions

Strathdale 2014 Champions

The Bendigo Amateur Soccer League (BASL) would like to congratulate both the Strathdale Division One and Youth teams on winning their respective Championships.

The Division One team secured the Championship on Sunday after defeating Golden City 6-1, whilst their closest rivals to the Championship, Spring Gully lost to the building Eaglehawk.

The Division One side followed on from their successful 2013 campaign where they took out the League and Cup double. Lead once again by Stuart Gough, the Blues started the 2014 Championship season, where they left off in 2013, winning all of their first six matches.  This cemented their position on the top of the League ladder from which they never look like losing for the remainder of the season.

With the Competitions runaway leading goal scorer, Sean Boxshall unable to be stopped, he has proved to be a menace in front of goal, racking up twice as many goals as the Competitions second highest goal scorer, Strathdale’s Jon Bryers.

From scoring more goals than every other team, the team’s defense has been the foundation of their success this season conceding far fewer goals than any other club. From Goalkeeper Alex Culvenor to the defensive efforts of Daniel De Blauw, Strathdale’s back line has been incredibly hard to break down.

Led by Captain Nick Watson, the teams attacking, positive play has seen them drop few points, with the clubs only defeat so far this season coming at the hands of Spring Gully. A single goal to Jon Bryers wasn’t enough as Strathdale went down 2-1 back in June.

The Division One team will now turn their attention to the 2014 BASL Premiership Final Series, under the newly structured senior competition, where they will be hoping win even more silverware to secure themselves as a true champion team.

As the clubs Division One team went about securing back to back Championships, so did their Youth Team, who won the Championship for the third straight year.

The Youth team, under the guidance of Tony Vlaeminck and Jon Bryers have taken all before them over the last three seasons, which all lends well for the future of the club, who is already having so much success at senior level. The Youth team lead by captain Ben Dreschler, have only conceded four goals so far this season, which shows a lot of discipline in the back half, but it is not just their defense that has been so impressive this year, with the team also having scored the most goals, with a massive 59 goals, 12 more then the next best.

Broderick Jacobs and Keian Tramm lead the way with 13 and 10 goals respectively, which is not bad for two players who only joined the club during the off-season.

Only time will tell if Strathdale continue their dominance of the Mens’s Division 1 and Youth Division, but if the season so far is anything o go by they will be hard to beat in the September Finals action.

The BASL Finals series will commence on Sunday 31 August, with the Gran Finals scheduled for Sunday 14 September at Tom Flood Sports Centre.

BASL would like to thank its major supporters, Bendigo Bank, Sports Power Bendigo and Brewhouse Coffee Roasters.
