Budget Notes: Port MacDonnell Football Club vs Nang 28th May 2011
Writing this a bit blind as I wasn’t at the game but sounds like it was a day like any other except for one thing…. our senior colts inspirational show of sportsmanship. So inspirational, that when I found out about it, I was moved to tears. Unfounded accusations have sometimes been directed our way, suggesting that possibly we like to ‘bend’ the rules for our own benefit but as this amazing act of sportsmanship clearly shows, Port MacDonnell Football Club is ONLY about giving as many kids as we can a good game of football, no matter what standard they are. If you are unaware of the story, I will try repeat it as it came to me – Our senior colts coach, Peter Zeitz lent Nangwarry as many kids as they needed, giving them some of our more senior players as to create a more even and competitive game for everyone. To Nangwarry’s credit, they came up and were able to beat our boys by 8 points. The most amazing and emotional thing I heard about the event was that all our boys went into the opposition’s change rooms and sang their song with them, bringing not only a tear to the coach’s eye but to many others I imagine. Isn’t this is what it is all about? Well done Pete and your band of helpers, plus the players who went over; your act of kindness may inspire others to really look deep at what football can do. A moment we can all be proud of.
Also, congratulations to Big Will McDonald who played his 50th game against Nangwarry – sorry secretary oversight but let’s celebrate his 51st against Hatherleigh! Again, sorry Will, but it seems it certainly didn’t stop you from playing a blinder and getting first best! Also today in the B Grade (if all goes to plan in the next 3 weeks and he doesn’t get injured), Craig Aslin will play in his 250th game. Craig has been playing for a long time, on and off, back before my time! Congratulations Craig for your loyal service over the last 15+ years. Also congratulations to Tom Zeitz, Ned Wilke and Lockie Tilley for making SAPSASA; hope you guys had a very successful week in Adelaide.
Junior Colts: Played Nangas at home. Thanks to the boys that voluntarily put their hand up to play for them - Tim, Lockie, Sam, Tom Z,Ben, Ryan, Ned and Jarred F. Great team effort, and fantastic use of the ball and their ability to work hard for each other all over the ground was good to see. Keep up the good work boys. Best Players were Ned Wilke, Tim Sullivan, Sam Zeitz, Will Rolph, Jarred Mansell, Grady Hutchesson and the rest of the team.
Senior Colts: I am most proud of all players from both sides in a game that saw football and sportsmanship victorious. Well done to the players who volunteered to play for Nangwarry, all of which played with great tenacity and worked as a team with new team mates. The tight contest benefitted and challenged all players which made the match a great spectacle. Our team certainly is in a position to experiment and lose a game, but in the interest of player development, I would urge other coaches not to rely on percentage to contest for the four at the expense of a club working overtime to get on the park. At the end of the day, it’s junior footy, let’s look after the kids. Well done Nangwarry on a very well earned win.
B Grade: It was a very disciplined game from the team this week, so the budget notes have gone to the person (Nummy) who is leaving for a couple of months. It was a great team effort this week, with everyone contributing. Kane had a great game, running out on the wing all day; Matty Ikin was getting plenty of the ball in the middle. Brett had another great game (Happy 21st) and overall it was another great win. Keep it up Boys!
A Grade: The A grade side finished with a very good win, slowly building towards a 4 quarter effort. The skill level was a vast improvement on the past few weeks which contributed to a big, big win. Best players were Big Will again who gave midfielders first use and was handy pushing into the forward line. Adam (Trev)Taylor again found plenty of the footy and Benny Mac played a very solid game and will only get better in the next few months. Ducky O’dine was a strong presence in the forward line but brother Ben was not at all impressed with the knee in the back of the head. Bull and Benny Odine and Will all finished with 6 goals. Well done to Nangwarry, stick at it we were there only a few years ago - football runs in cycles, I’m sure your turn will come again.
