Round 3
Seniors
Golden Square 16.5 - 101 def Gisborne 5.7 - 37
Gisborne made the trip to Golden Square on Saturday to play in a re match of last year's grand final. The game started off as a very tight affair in the first quarter with both side not scoring in the first ten minutes. We had a lot of difficulty in penetrating our forward line with poor ball use often finding our Golden Square opponents. Fine efforts from Anthony Belcher, Ryan Webster and Tim Walsh limited Golden Square's scoring opportunities. We ended up being five points down at the first change. In the second quarter we only scored one behind to two goals for Golden Square. Once more we were not effective in our disposal and had trouble making any impact on the scoreboard. Ollie Messaoudi and Daniel Weaver were solid contributors in the midfield. Rod Sharp also played well in defence. Golden Square put in an excellent performance in the second half scoring eleven goals to three. Webster and Belcher continue to minimize the damage in defence. Pat McKenna put in a solid effort from limited opportunities in his first senior game. Golden Square put in an even team effort with twelve goal scorers for the day. This week we will work very hard on the training track to be in top shape when we face Maryborough at home

Reserves
Golden Square 11.6 - 72 def Gisborne 3.8 - 26
Gisborne Reserves took on Golden Square at the Wade St oval in what promised to be a tough encounter. From the first bounce, both sides hit the contest hard with Campbell, Hynson and Scales doing well and by quarters end, Square, who were kicking with the breeze, had posted 1 goal 4 points to Gisborne’s 2 points. The second quarter saw Gisborne controlling the game for long periods however our inability to kick goals meant that we were unable to put any scoreboard pressure on Square who went in at the long break with a comfortable lead of 5.4 to O.6 points. McKenna, K O’Gorman and Nightscales all were going well. The third quarter was a tight affair with Square kicking four goals to Gisborne’s three and thus the status quo from half time remained. Headberry was providing a great target up forward taking some strong grabs on the lead whilst Burgess was doing well around the stoppages. The last quarter again was a tight, tough tussle and although the scoreboard would indicate otherwise, the game was an very even contest with Gisborne’s inaccurate kicking letting Square off the hook.
Best players on the day were Headberry, Scales, Campbell, O’Gorman, Nightscales and Burgess.
Under 18’s
Golden Square 9.11 - 65 def Gisborne 4.8 - 32
Gissy 18's started well on the weekend and were hard at the ball and at the contest. Whilst they had lost their forward spearhead who got the late call up to 1's duties they showed that they were up to the Square challenge. The boys welcomed back BJ Calvert down back and he and Rob Andrews fought hard all day to repel the ball out of the Gisborne defensive area. The boys went into the half time break 1 point behind however were confident they could match their square foes. However that is where the whole plan stopped, the Gisborne pups after ten solid quarters to start the year suddenly attempted to do their own thing and decided not to man up.
Square took over with their run and spread game and if not for the efforts of Calvert, Trotta and Rob Andrews down back the Gisborne boys may have gone down by plenty more. A solid week on the track along with a renewed enthusiasm will see the Bulldogs come out against the Strath Storm.

Netball.
This week we travelled up the highway to Golden Square with mixed results.
U 17.
The girls started off strongly this week, they passed the ball down the court with a lot more confidence to give them a 3 gaol lead at half time. The third quarter the girls really fired up and played extremely disciplined netball to out score Square 18 to 6. Gisborne kept the momentum going in the last quarter to give them a 18 goal win.
B Res.
The girls were under manned this week with two girls pulling out at the last minute due to illness. The girls tried hard against a strong Square team. Keep going girls lets make this a win this week at home.
B. Grade.
Square got the jump on the girls in the first quarter to give them an 8 goal lead. With a few changes made the girls got on a roll and went goal for goal with their opponent. The last half the girls dropped away to give to give Square an easy victory.

This was a tough game where the lead changed several times. Gisborne led the first quarter by a goal, Square came back at us and by the main break were three up. The third and final quarter was a ripper and had everyone on the edge of their seats. The goalers were shooting consistently while the mid court and defenders were grabbing everything that came there way, a few small errors were costly for the girls in the final term to give Square a two win Good team effort.
A Grade.
This was a fast game from the start with both teams giving everything. The Gizzy girls passed the ball well and made some excellent moves to give them a one goal lead 8 to 7. The 2nd quarter was the same as the first with both teams trading goal for goal. Gisborne went into the main break with the mearest of leads one goal. Come the third quarter led by Melissa the defence stepped up a notch to send many turnovers back down the court for the goalers to finish up their job. Gisborne led by 5 goals at 3/4 time. The Gizzy girls knew that Square would come back hard at them and 5 goals wasn’t hard to make up in 15 mins. The girls kept the momentum going and increased their lead, and came out winning by seven. Good win.
