This week the Gisborne Football Netball Club would like to congratulate Cam Medica on his 150th senior game for the club. Cam started out his football career in the U9’s at the Gisborne Rookies Junior Football Club and then progressed through the 10’s, 12’s, 14’s and 16’s before going on to the senior club. Cam is a Gisborne boy through and through and the club would like to thank him for his wonderful contribution to our club. Well done “Kenyan” and let’s hope we see you pass the 200 mark in the not too distant future.
Football Round 18 Summaries
Seniors.
Gisborne 26.18 - 174 def Castlemaine 13.8 - 86.
Gisborne booked their place in the finals with a commanding victory over Castlemaine at Camp Reserve last Saturday. To ensure their spot, the Dogs also needed Eaglehawk to beat South Bendigo and after solid Eaglehawk victory, the final ladder saw South drop out and Gisborne take 5th position and thus contest their 12th finals campaign in their 14 years in the BFL.
The Dogs got off to a flyer kicking 7.8 to the Magpies 2.1 in the first quarter. They continued to roll on in the second adding another 8 majors to Castlemaine’s 2 solitary points and by half time had pretty much sealed the deal when they led by 86 points. The second half was a more even affair with both sides scoring 11 goals apiece and at the final siren the Dogs had engineered a comprehensive 88 point victory.
U/18’s player Pat McKenna was terrific up forward kicking 6 whilst Tom May also had an excellent return for his efforts slotting 5 for the day. Goal kicking mid fielders are always invaluable and with 3 apiece from both Shaun Comerford and Ollie Messaoudi, the Dogs were able to maintain massive scoreboard pressure on the Pies for the whole game.
Shaun Comerford had a fantastic game and was named as Gisborne’s best from Casey Summerfield, who has continued on with his terrific run of form. Tim Walsh was terrific in the back half and iron man Ollie Messaoudi continues to defy medical opinion, playing an excellent game in the middle. Lachie Crosbie provided great run and carry all day and U/18 first gamer Shannon Greetham was also named amongst the best laying an impressive 11 tackles for the game.

Reserves.
Gisborne 15.12-102 def Castlemaine 3.3-21
The Gisborne Reserves finished off their home and away season in great fashion at Camp Reserve last Saturday when they barnstormed their way to an impressive 81 point victory over Castlemaine.
In racing parlance, they “flew the gates” and by quarter time had opened up a 45 point lead scoring 7.3 for the quarter and at the same time holding the Magpies goalless. They continued relentlessly on their way in the second term and by half time the lead had blown out to over 10 goals.
In the second half Castlemaine were a far more committed side and to some extent they managed to slow the Dogs rate of progress. From the sidelines it did appear however that once the game was in the bag the Gisborne boys “put the cue in the rack” and coasted to the line with thoughts of a big finals campaign on offer and not wanting an injury which might jeopardize their chances.
Jason Storie was named as Gisborne’s best following an excellent game and the evergreen Jason Duff-Tyler tuned himself up for finals with a terrific display in the ruck. Jarrod Vernon, Aaron Storie and Jamieson Campbell were good while Lachie O’Gorman rounded out the best players after helping himself to 6 majors for the game.
Goal Kickers – L. O’Gorman 6, J.Storie 3, A.Headberry 3, J.Duff-Tyler, J.Vernon, K.O’Gorman, M.Maric.
Best Players– J.Storie, J.Duff-Tyler, J.Vernon, A.Storie, J.Campbell, L.O’Gorman.
Under 18’s.
Gisborne 8.8-56 def Sandhurst 5.9-39
An undermanned Gisborne U/18’s outfit confronted top side Sandhurst on the hallowed turf of QEO Bendigo last Saturday.
Playing with only 17, due to injuries and players being called upon for senior duties, the Bulldogs were told by coach Nico to not worry about the result and to just judge their performance against themselves and as it turned out Sandhurst were not in for an easy ride.
The young Doggies were quick out of the blocks and had several early chances to stamp their authority on the game. Their spiritual leader Josh Govan was back at the helm and he marshaled his troops well. He was ably assisted by Jimmy O'Hare, who again worked hard displaying elite running and silky skills and he provided the forwards with numerous opportunities to take a shot at goal.
Libba Logan was good down back, displaying his best form of the season and young
Dan Glenister showed his fantastic closing speed and spoiling skills when he was able to thwart numerous marking attempts by Sandhurst’s big, league-leading goal kicker.
The Gisborne boys toiled hard and were able to go into the 1st break just 6 points adrift, however they were outrun a little in the second stanza and were down by 13 points at the half time break.
The coaches implored their young chargers to not fall away and crack under the pressure, and sure enough Govan, Wood, Glenister, O'Hare, Logan and co. took the instructions onboard and the tide began to turn. The Bulldogs managed 1.4 to just 4 points in the third quarter and in the process, set up a cracker of a last quarter with only a 7 point deficit standing in the way of the young Dogs.
The last quarter belonged to Gisborne with the mid field once again taking control and they pumped the ball forward for Bond, Lamplugh and Challis to post majors. Trent Crosbie displayed strong marking and was also one of the team’s runners when the game was there to be won. Trickey, Govan and O'Hare also showed superior fitness and the Gisborne boys eventually emerged the winners of a cracking game to the tune of 17 points and got the victory they wanted going into the 2013 finals campaign.
Now onto late August/ September action and a chance to consolidate on a great season to date. Well done to all GFNC teams who will compete in finals action.
Go Well.

Netball
This was the last of the home and away games and it felt great to go out with five wins against Castlemaine. Unfortunately we have to say good bye to two teams, the B Grade and B Res who just missed out on playing finals. These girls had to play with different players each week due to injuries and girls having to play up and this made things difficult, however toward the end of the season, when the girls had consistent teams, they played good quality netball. To these girls the club would like to say that we are very proud of you all and we hope to see you back next season. This Sunday we have two teams who are playing in finals and they are the A. Res and the U/17 girls while A Grade has a week off courtesy of having finished top of the table. Good luck to you all and the call is out for all Gisborne netball players and supporters come along and cheer for the girls.
