The Cats celebrated a first for the club with each of its 3 senior men’s sides victorious on the weekend. With the Cats having entered a 3rd side into the BLK AFL Sydney competition this year, this was a moment to celebrate with gusto; the club song ringing out loudly across Fairfax Reserve.
The day started with an arm wrestle in Division 5 between the Cats and Holroyd Parramatta. The game was tight all day with less than a goal separating the teams at each change. The Div 5 side was again serviced well by Liam Jeeson, who in his first year of senior football has been a consistent performer in both defense and attack. He slotted 4 goals for Camden, well supported by Scott McGilvray with 3 goals and reliable veteran Paul Love with 2 goals. AFL convert Joe Rawlins continued to impress in his first season of AFL in defense, backed up well by Scott Laid. The Cats were victorious by 8 points. Next week the team heads up the M5 to play a UTS side fresh off a big win against Pennant Hills.
Next up was the Cats Division 4 side, keen to make it back-to-back wins for the first time this season. They played a dedicated and physical Holroyd Parramatta side that had come to Camden to play a hard, tough brand of football. Best a field Tommy Glynn had a blinder of a game out on the Fairfax Reserve wing, with a bag full of possessions. Nick Laws continued his recent run a good form in defense and was again one of Camden’s best, whilst Matt Wells and young gun Jamie Brown provided great run out of the back half. Stephen Mann had his kicking boots on for the home side, kicking 3 majors. The game was a close contest all day with a nail biting last quarter seeing the Cats get home by a very slim margin, 2 points. Next week the Div 4 side plays at home against Southern Power, trying to make it three wins in a row.
In the main game, Camden’s first grade side faced arch-rival Manly. This was the second time the two clubs had played each other this season, with Manly easily accounting for Camden in the first fixture. The first quarter was tightly contested with the Giants goal kicking accuracy the difference at quarter time. After quarter time, the game was all one-way traffic, with the home side playing a skillful and accountable brand of football. The midfield was well led well by hard man Mark Halteh, whilst Mitch Broadstock played his best game for Camden this season; his slick skills and speed too good for the opposition. Josiah Ayling and Matt Lecek were potent up in front of goal each kicking 3 goals for the winners, well supported in the forward line by Matt Withers.
The 43 point win has Camden sitting in 2nd place after 5 rounds, with their next assignment over at Henson Park taking on Western Suburbs.
