The Camden Cats first grade side has gone to the top of the BLK AFL Sydney Division 2 ladder with an impressive 50-point win over the highly rated Blacktown Magic at Fairfax Reserve.
Camden jumped out of the blocks with a 7 goal to 3 goal first half, spearheaded by full forward Matthew Lecek, whose strong overhead marking and laser like goal kicking was a highlight for the adoring Camden Cats home crowd. He was well supported in the forward line by Club Captain Joey Ayling who continues to impress this season. Another positive for the Cats was the spread of goal kickers on the day; with ten Cats players kicking a major. The Cats win was set-up in the backline with the Sommerville brothers again outstanding in the back half, nullifying the Blacktown attack with the hard, tough and physical brand of football that all Chris Hughes coached teams are synonymous for.
Camden’s Division 5 side continued to press for a finals berth with a 29-point win over Pennant Hills at The Cattery. The Cats backline didn’t give an inch all day, keeping Pennant Hills scoreless in the first half. Tom Vella, Tommy Glynn, Grant “Boof” Jones and comeback kid Ben Grasso led from the front all day for the home team. But the big story of the day was the playing return of club stalwart Ben Wright who showed he still knows where the big sticks are with five majors. His strong marking and physical presence down at full forward helped set-up the win for the home side. He was well supported in the Cats forward line by Ben “Sparrow” McDermott who kicked four goals.
The Cats Div 4 side’s three game winning streak came to an abrupt end with a disappointing 46-point loss against Macquarie University. The Camden side struggled to get going all day, with Macquarie’s midfield dominating the centre clearances and around the ground. The Cats forward line struggled to convert the numerous inside fifties on the scoreboard, kicking one of its lowest totals for the season. The backline was the shining light for the home team with Aaron Beves, Jamie Brown, Grant James, Nick Laws and Ben Reid best afield for the Cats. Next week the division 4 side takes on second placed North Shore.
The Cats host three games at The Cattery next round from 10:30am. The first grade side will be looking to maintain its hold on top spot taking on the Penrith Rams in the main game at 2:30pm.
