The Camden Cats first grade side has cemented its place at the top of the BLK AFL Sydney Division 2 ladder with a hard fought 19-point win over the Penrith Rams at Fairfax Reserve.
Camden was out to prove that it is the team to beat in 2015 against a skillful and committed Penrith Rams side that had come ready to knock off the ladder leaders. The game was extremely physical and tight during the first three quarters with the teams separated by only 4 points heading into the last quarter. After a rev up from Head Coach Chris Hughes at three quarter time, the Camden players responded, finishing the game strongly with a four goal to two last quarter. Matt Lecek again had his kicking boots on nailing a number of tough set shots in crucial moments of the game. He kicked 4 goals for the winners, well supported by goal sneak Blake Pearce who bobbed up with 3 goals. Centre half back Brenton Sommerville was the Cats best player and rock solid again down back against a very tall, physical and talented Penrith forward line, whilst in the middle it was Joel Wheeler and Mitch Broadstock leading the way.
Camden’s Division 4 side kept its finals chances well and truly alive with a solid 39-point win over second placed North Shore at Fairfax Reserve. The first half was extremely tight, with both teams struggling to turn inside 50s into scores. After the main break it was a three goal to zero third quarter that set up the win for Camden. Stephen Mann and Matt Morey were the focal points up forward with 3 goals apiece, many of them coming in the second half. First time player Nathan Rao impressed in his first hit out for the Cats, with a number of impressive run and carries through the midfield. But it was Ben Reid who was Camden’s best afield picking up plenty of possessions around all parts of the ground. He was well supported by Ben Grasso, young gun Liam Jesson and tall timber Matt Wells. All in all it was a great team win for Div 4.
Camden’s Division 5 side was locked in an arm wrestle against Sydney Uni at Fairfax Reserve, with Sydney Uni victorious in the end by 18-points. The Cats held a slender lead heading into the final quarter, but were outplayed in the last quarter by a determined and spirited Sydney Uni side. There were lots of positives for the Cats out of the game. Debutant Hayden Bee was a revelation in the backline picking up a bag full of possessions across all parts of the ground. His blistering speed and skills left the opposition in his wake. Jordy Lee, Tom Vella and Dave “Dell” Elliot were solid contributors across the centre line, whilst up forward the big story of the day was Greg McGuiness who kicked 2 goals.
Next weekend the Cats have only one team in action with Division 4 coming up against Sydney Uni at Fairfax Reserve.
