The Camden Cats celebrated away wins in all three grades for the first time in the club’s history – a cat-trick of victories! The wins see Camden’s Division 2 side go two games clear at the top of the BLK AFL Sydney Division 2 ladder, Division 4 rise to second place, and Division 5 to within striking distance of a top five place.
The Cats Division 5 side travelled down the M5 to take on Randwick. A scrappy affair throughout the entire game, both sides struggled to convert their possession into scores. Camden took a 3-goal lead into half time after improving its accuracy in front of goal in the second quarter. Things tightened up in the second half, with Randwick getting within striking distance late in the game. Camden’s defense was able to stand strong in the final minutes, the Cats winning in the end by 5 points. Camden was well serviced by Dave Elliot, ruckman John Murtagh, backman Tom Vella, and forward Jarryd Kitching, whilst Ross Kilpatrick had one of his best games for the club.
Camden’s Division 4 side started its game against Moorebank with a 6-goal to zero first quarter in one of its most skillful displays for the season. The Cats players monstered their opposition throughout the game, their tackling and ball pressure a highlight. Jared Mullaney was again one of Camden’s best around the stoppages and in the middle. He was well supported by James Merrick, Jaime Page and Jon Wright. After taking a 64-point lead into half time, the Cats continued to pile on the goals in the second half, running out 102-point winners. The Cats side shared the goals with 10 individual goal kickers, with Moses Newham kicking four goals for the winners.
Camden’s injury depleted Division 2 side won a nail-biting, low scoring contest against rival Moorebank by 6 points at Rosedale Park. After a confident start to the game, the Cats struggled to continue their good form into the second and third quarters, with the two sides separated by only 2 points at three quarter time. The Cats players found their mojo again in the last quarter, with Cats Captain Mark Maher leading the way in the last quarter, repelling every Moorebank advance. He had a blinder of a game from the half back line, well supported by Matt Smith who had his best game for 2015. James Broadbent’s run and carry was telling in the second half, whilst Blake Pearce had a great game playing against his old side.
Next week - Saturday 20 June is our annual Camden Cats Ladies' Day at Fairfax Reserve, an opportunity for the club to show its appreciation for all that our mothers, wives, girlfriends and partners do to support our playing group and the game of AFL. We will be hosting a ladies lunch at the club, with the Fairfax Pavilion to be decorated in pink. The players will be wearing a special pink football jumper on the day in support of women's health, with each jumper to be sold after the completion of the round to raise money for the Cancer Council.
