Saturday 20 June was the Camden Cats annual Ladies Day with all 3 senior teams in action at the club’s home ground, Fairfax Reserve. The Cats Division 2 side continued its winning ways with a 44-point victory over North Shore in the main game. The win sees Camden’s first grade side maintain its position at the top of the BLK AFL Sydney Division 2 ladder and stretch its winning streak to 7 games.
Earlier in the day, Camden’s Division 4 side continued to stamp its premiership credentials with a 38-point win over local rival Wollondilly. With a number of regular Division 4 players called up to the Division 2 side, due to injuries, the player depth of the club was tested against a strong Knights opposition. The Cats played a tough, physical and skillful brand of football all day, easily its best outing for the season against quality opposition. An accurate 4-goal second term saw the Cats take a 29-point lead into half time, a lead they never relinquished in the second half. Jared Mullaney was again a standout for Camden in the midfield, well supported by returning player Mitch Hogan who showed he still knows how to find the Sherrin. He was the standout down back, whilst up forward the Cats again shared the goals around, with Shanan Kershaw the leading goal kicker with 3 majors.
Camden’s injury ravaged Division 2 side had a comfortable 44-point win over bottom side North Shore. The Cats made a solid start, easily winning the midfield battle in the first half, but were unable to capitalise on its possession on the scoreboard. After a rev up from Coach Chris Hughes at half time, the Cats responded, with a 6-goal to 2-goal second half. Nick Hills had a day out off halfback picking up a bag full of possessions, well supported by stand-in Captain Mark Maher, young gun Matty Smith and strong man James Bottin-Noonan who had one of his best games for 2015. In the forward line, the focal point was Shane “Dozer” Doherty who slotted 6 goals for the winners and uncharacteristically handballed one away. Next week, the first grade side plays away against Wests at Picken Oval.
The Cats Division 5 side struggled against the top of the table UNSW/ES side whose physical play and silky skills were a class above the young Cats side. The effort from the Camden side was there all day, but their possession was unable to be turned into scoreboard pressure. Best players for the Cats were Tom Vella, Joe Rawlins and Ross Kilpatrick, whilst Captain Dave Elliott was the only goal scorer for the home side.
Fairfax Reserve was a sea of pink on Saturday in support of women’s health, with a ladies lunch held in the club’s function room. The day was about showing our appreciation for all that the ladies do to support our players, whilst at the same time raising money for charity through a game day raffle, auction and sale of special pink football jumpers worn by the players on the day. Ladies Day was a great success!
