The Camden Cats Division 2 side continued its winning ways with a clinical 72-point win over Wests at Picken Oval. The win sees the Cats Division 2 side remain two games clear at the top of the BLK AFL Sydney Division 2 ladder.
Camden’s first grade side played one of its best four-quarter games for the season with its physical and skillful style of play no match for Wests. The Cats had winners all over the park, easily winning the midfield battle and clearances. After a strong first half, the Cats took a 37-point lead into half time, continuing to score at will after half time with a 7 goal to 2 second half. In the midfield Mark Halteh continued his great recent form, well supported by Vice-Captain Joel Wheeler and speedster Mitch Broadstock. Up forward Matt Withers was a strong physical presence drawing a number of key defenders, allowing goal sneak Blake Pearce to crumb the packs. “Pearcey” kicked 4 majors for the winners, with Matt Withers, Matt Lecek and James Broadbent kicking two apiece. The big story for the Cats was down back with the run off half back of Sommerville, Laws and Bottin-Noonan a highlight.
The Cats Division 4 side was looking to extend its three game winning streak to four games when it took on Sydney Uni at Mahoney Park. The Cats were sluggish in the first term on a wet and dewy surface, struggling to adjust to the conditions. An improved second term saw the Cats trail by 15-points at half time. After half time, Sydney Uni dominated around the ground and on the scoreboard, kicking 8 goals to 2 in the second half, delivering them a 55-point win. For Camden, Tommy Glynn was a stand out on the wing gathering possessions at will, well supported by James Merrick who had his best game for the Cats. In the back half, veteran defender Ben Grasso and young gun Liam Jesson were the Cats best. In the forward line Stephen Mann was the most potent scorer for the Cats kicking five of Camden’s six goals for the game. Next week Division 4 has a must win game against Campbelltown.
Camden’s Division 5 team was the only side playing at Fairfax Reserve, taking on Nor-West. The Cats were keen to put on a better showing after a disappointing loss to UNSW/ES the week prior. They started the game well, with the player’s endeavor and skills much improved, only trailing by 14-points at half time. The Cats hit the ground running after the main break scoring 3 goals to draw within striking distance of the Jets at three quarter time. In the last quarter it was all Nor-West, the visitors eventually winning by 35-points. For Camden, best players were Tom Vella, who had another stellar game for the Div 5 side, well supported by Matty Wynne. Up forward Scott McGilvray was the only multiple goal kicker for the Cats, kicking 2 goals.
Saturday 4 July is “Old Boys/Heritage Round” at The Cattery with all three sides playing at home. This year marks the 10-year anniversary of the club’s last first grade premiership and to commemorate this milestone, the club will be holding a function for the 2005 premiership side and our current Cats first grade side will adorn the original Camden Cats football jumper in the main game.
