The Camden Cats Division 2 side has crushed second placed side Manly with an impressive 87-point win at Fairfax Reserve. The win sees the Cats’ go three games clear at the top of the BLK AFL Sydney Division 2 ladder.
The Cats side started the game sluggishly, unable to capitalise on its first half possession on the scoreboard. Its defense however was rock solid, allowing only one goal from the opposition in the first half, with backmen Brenton Sommerville, Josh Leys and Mitch Hogan among the Cats best down back. After half time the Cats stepped up a gear, led by ruckman Billy Wylie (whose attack at the ball and tackling was a highlight), speedster Mitch Broadstock and one man wrecking crew Mark Halteh. Stand-in Captain Mark Maher was sublime in defense and attack all day. He bobbed up for 3-goals off halfback with Matt Lecek also kicking 3 goals. Pleasing for Camden Coach Chris Hughes was the multiple avenues to goal for the Cats with 9 individual goal kickers for the day. The Cats were back to their best in the second half with a 9-goal to 2-goal second half, eventually running out winners by 15-goals. Next weekend the first grade side takes on the highly fancied Blacktown Magic.
Camden’s Division 4 side was looking to cement its place in the top five when it faced a strong Holroyd-Parramatta side at Gipps Road. In a tight, skillful and physical first half, the Cats struggled to make the most of its possession and inside 50s on the scoreboard trailing by 43-points at half time. The Cats mounted a strong comeback in the third term to come within 26-points at three quarter time, but the Goannas dominated the last quarter eventually running out 55-point winners. For the Cats, Tim Georgiou continued his recent run of good form dominating the ruck contest all day. He was well supported around the ground by Tom Vella, comeback kid Mick Sadler and hard running half forward Rhys Newham. He was one of the Cats best all day, kicking 2 goals and winning a heap of contested ball around the ground. In the back half, Sean Lakeman and Liam Jesson were solid all day. Next week the Cats Div 4 side has a must win game against Blacktown.
The Cats young Division 5 side took on another strong Holroyd-Parramatta side in the early game at Gipps Road. With a number of first gamers pulling on the Cats jumper, the side struggled for cohesion in the first half. Captain Dave Elliott was again a solid contributor in the middle and back half, repelling a number of Goanna forward advances, whilst Liam Kennedy won a number of clearances in the middle and around the ground. Up forward Ben Wright was a strong physical presence kicking 2 goals, well supported by Joel Mcgregor who took a number of great marks around the ground, and in and under specialist James “Snowy” Surridge. The Cats struggled to match the speed and skill of the Goannas, but were able to stem the flow of opposition scoring in the second half, eventually losing by 15-goals. Next weekend Div 5 takes on Randwick City, a must win game to have any chance of making finals.
