The Camden Cats Division 2 side has beaten local rival Moorebank by 22-points at Fairfax Reserve to go four games clear at the top of the BLK AFL Sydney Division 2 ladder and secure the minor premiership.
Moorebank started the game strongly, kicking four goals to Camden’s two goals in the first quarter; the Cats unable to capitalise on their possession on the scoreboard. An improved second quarter saw the Cats take a slender 3-point lead into the main break. A half time rev up from Head Coach Chris Hughes had the desired effect in the second half with a lift in intensity, physicality and ball skills from the Camden side. The Cats midfield started to get on top with Mitch Broadstock, Vicc Musgrave and late season recruit Ben Wharton leading the way. Down back Nick Laws was outstanding; his run and carry from deep in defense leading to a number of forward advances. A 6-goal to 3-goal second half set up the win for the home side, with Matt Withers and Blake Pearce the most potent goal scorers for the Cats. All in all, another solid win for the Cats, who head into the week off full of confidence.
Earlier in the day, Camden’s Division 4 side took on Randwick City in a must win game if they are to see any finals action in 2015. The Cats started the game on fire, dominating the centre clearances and making the most of every inside 50. A 7-goal to 3-goal first half saw the Cats hit the sheds with a 23-point lead at half time. In the second half the floodgates opened for the home side, with the Cats pilling on another 10-goals for a comfortable 60-point win. The big story of the day was Adam Noyce who kicked eight majors for the winners, with first time goal scorers Liam Kennedy and Sean Lakeman chiming in during the final quarter. For the Cats, Tom Vella was everywhere; his strong marking and attack on the ball was a highlight. Down back Ben Grasso played a great game, nullifying the Saints forward advances throughout the game, whilst ruckman/forward Ben Reid was back to his best with 3-goals.
Camden’s Division 5 side played the early game over at Greygums Oval against a strong Penrith side. The undermanned Cats side struggled to get going all day, with the Rams midfield dominating in the middle, around the ground, and in front of goal. For Camden, Joe Rawlins played a great game on his return from the ski slopes, supported well by Stephen Rooke and Dave Elliot. Down back veteran Rob Woolnough had another great game, supported well by Matt Boer. The young Cats side continued to work hard and support each other in the second half, but they were simply outclassed by one of the top sides in Division 5, eventually losing by 15-goals. The Cats next game is against fourth place Holroyd-Parramatta at home.
