The Camden Cats Division 2 side has beaten the North Shore Bombers by 20-points at Gore Hill Oval to keep its long running winning streak in tact, whilst the Cats Division 4 side continued its positive run towards the finals with a 40-point win.
Both Camden and North Shore’s Division 2 sides appeared sluggish in the early part of the game. Camden had their fair share of possession in the first half, but was unable to convert on the scoreboard. Skills were visibly poor and the scoring low, leading to one punter describing the first half of football as “ordinary”. A goalless second quarter by both sides saw the teams locked on 2-5-17 a piece going into the main break. After half time, the Camden midfield and defense started to get on top with hardman Mark Halteh leading the way. He was well supported by in and under specialist Vicc Musgrave and the newly promoted Tom Vella, who shone in his first game of first grade football. Down back the powerful left foots of Mark Maher and Mitch Hogan turned a number of opposition forward movements into quick rebound goals for the Cats. Up forward 3 goals from Matt Lecek keeps him at the top of the goal-kicking list in Division 2, whilst Shane Doherty’s silky skills were again on display. In the end, 3 goals from the Cats in the last 10 minutes of the game finally broke the backs of the Bombers and sealed the 20-point victory for the visitors.
Camden’s Division 4 side took on North Shore in a must win game if they are to finish top three and secure the double chance. The Cats faced a determined Bombers side in the first three quarters, with the home side taking it up to the Cats in all facets of the game. The lead changed on a number of occasions as both sides battled to get on top. In the second half, the Cats midfield started to win the contested ball led by gun player Jared Mullaney, who picked up where he left off 6 weeks ago, well supported by the hard running Jaime Page and tall timber Tim Georgiou and James Watkins. In the back half Camden’s defense was under immense pressure all day, with dependable back men Ben Grasso and Nick Laws some of Camden’s best. In the last quarter it was all one-way traffic, with Camden kicking 6 goals and keeping North Shore scoreless. Up forward the Cats had 9 individual goal kickers for the game, with Ben Reid the most potent scorer with four goals. Next week the Division 4 side takes on top of the table Macquarie University at home.
Camden’s Division 5 side was playing its last home game for 2015 up against a strong Holyroyd-Parramatta side. Camden took it up to their more fancied opponents in the first half, playing the hard, tough and skillful brand of football that Coach Paul Love had been waiting to see all season. The Cats side was hungry for the football and it showed on the scoreboard with the Cats leading at quarter time and half time. After the halftime break, Holyroyd-Parramatta mounted a strong comeback with the last half becoming a physical and fierce contest with both sides desperate to win the game. In the end, the Cats side ran out of steam, going down by 13-points. It was a truly great team effort from Camden, with Cal Robinson, Dave Elliot, Matt Wells, Ben Laid and Jarrod Eason some of the Cats best, whilst Joe “Ashes” Rawlins played a cracker of a game slotting 5 goals and taking some great grabs up forward. It was a solid hit out from the Cats and some really positive signs heading into Division 5’s final round against Pennant Hills.
