The Camden Cats Division 2 side has annihilated Western Suburbs by 118-points at Fairfax Reserve to extend its winning streak and continue its run of good form heading into the BLK AFL Sydney finals.
The Camden Cats were back to their best this round, playing a hard, tough and skillful brand of football. The home team didn’t give an inch all day, winning the hard ball around the ground and putting their skills with hand and foot to good use. Western Suburbs could quickly see why Fairfax Reserve has been a fortress this season, with the Cats undefeated at home. Josh ”The Prez” Leys enjoyed one of his best games of the season, with vice-captains James Broadbent and Joel Wheeler playing a great supporting role at ground level. Another positive for the Cats was the run and carry of Ben Yakimov, who will be a great asset for the Cats coming into finals in what has been an injury plague season for the Cats strong man. Up forward the Cats had multiple avenues to goal with 9 individual goal scorers. Shane Doherty was the most potent goal scorer with five, with his positioning in the goal square for the easy handball a highlight. Matt Lecek and Blake Pearce were also able to find the big sticks on multiple occasions. Overall, another great performance from the Cats who keep going from strength to strength. Next week the first grade side takes on the Penrith Rams in their last home and away game before the finals begin.
The Cats Division 4 side was up against top team Macquarie University at home, in a must win game for them to secure a finals berth. The home team started well in the first half in perfect conditions for AFL at The Cattery, with the Cats turning a number of first half inside 50s into goals. The goals came off the back of some great work from Tommy Glynn, Dan McKay, Moses Newham and Tom Vella in the middle and around the ground. Camden was able to match the top team for skills and physicality in the first half, but was unable to stop their opposition from scoring; the Cats going into the main break trailing by less than two kicks. Looking for an improved second half, the Cats struggled, with their lowest scoring quarter for the game leaving the home team trailing by 23-points at the last change. The Cats lifted their effort and intensity in the last quarter, but it was not enough to get the home side across the line, the Cats eventually going down by 15-points. In the forward line Ben Reid had another great game with 4 majors, with Cats skipper Jarryd Kitching playing a solid supporting role. The loss leaves Camden hanging onto fifth place with a must win game coming up next week against Manly.
Camden’s Division 5 side played its last game for 2015 away from home against finals bound Pennant Hills. The undermanned Cats side was valiant in defeat, giving one hundred percent for the entire game. The brightest light for the Camden side was Daniel Barnett who was a revelation in his first game for the club. He was well supported by Josh Barbaro, Ross Kilpatrick, Corey Walker, Matt Wells and Dave Elliot. Though doing it tough on the scoreboard all day, the boys walked off the ground at the end of the game with their heads held high, having left nothing in the tank. The Cats Division 5 side will be back bigger and stronger next season.
