The Camden Cats have been defeated by 10 points in their 2nd semi final against Blacktown Magic at Henson Park.
The first half saw the Cats struggle to adjust to the blustery conditions, with Blacktown’s inaccuracy in front of goal keeping the minor premiership winning Camden side within striking distance at half-time, trailing by 6 points.
To the delight of the large and passionate contingent of Camden fans at the game, the Cats began clawing their way back into the contest in the third quarter, as they began to show glimpses of their regular season form.
The last quarter was a real arm wrestle, with neither side able to take the ascendancy. Camden’s midfield started to hit a second gear in the last term, with midfielders Mark Halteh and Ben Wharton the standouts.
In the end though, Blacktown were able to hold out a fast finishing Camden side, going on to post a 10 point victory and earn themselves a place in the AFL Sydney division two grand final.
For the Cats, full forward Matthew Withers was outstanding, well supported by Josiah Ayling, whose strong marking in tough conditions was a highlight.
Down back the big story was steely defender Mitch Hogan who had a fantastic game across halfback, repelling a number of Blacktown attacking moves.
“Obviously the boys are disappointed with the loss on Saturday,” said Club Captain Josiah Ayling, who was one of the Cats best afield.
“We know that we were far from our best against Blacktown and have to improve if we are to win next weekend,” Ayling said.
The Cats will now face arch-rival Manly Giants in next weekend’s preliminary final, their fourth meeting against Manly this season. The winner will play Blacktown for the AFL Sydney division two premiership cup Saturday week.
