Two Cairns Australian rules footballers have been named in the Queensland Scorpions under-18 squad after starring for the Country Kookaburras at the state championships in Brisbane.
Jye Bohm and Sam Michael, who have both relocated to Brisbane to link with state league club Redlands, made the 28-man squad along with four of their Kookaburras teammates.
Both Bohm and Michael are key position players and helped the Kookaburras achieve one of their best championship results.
The Kookaburras made the grand final for the first time since 2007 before losing to the South East Bushrangers 13.9 (87) to 3.5 (23) in the decider.
Cairns AFL development manager Eddie Skiba said Bohm and Michael deserved their Queensland selection and expected both to do well in state colours.
"They’re certainly capable but it’s always a bit difficult when you jump to the next level because you don’t know what to expect," he said.
"It’s really about believing in themselves and challenging themselves to get to that next level.
Bohm and Michael will attend their first Queensland training session on Monday before hit-outs against the under-18 combinations of Greater Western Sydney (April 17) and the Geelong Falcons (April 24).
Round one of the AFL under-18 national championships starts on May 22.
