Traditionally the pre-season is never a time that defender Matthew Jones tends to enjoy, however with an exciting group of youngsters, combining with some seasoned veterans, the 29 year old is relishing the summer months and the hard work.
“We’ve been working really hard, Steve (Coach Steven Smithwick) is making sure that we are primed and ready to go by Round 1 and excitement levels are really high” Jones said.
Jones believes that this year could be an exciting one for the Kangaroos. With fantastic numbers on the track, the Southside club will be looking to build on the momentum that was made up towards the end of last year. “Steve has done a fantastic job, we’ve got a young group of kids who just got better and better last year and their improvement has been really great to watch on the training track” added Jones.
Personally, Jones who joined the club last year after 7 years at the Mayne Football Club in Brisbane, has never enjoyed his football as much and credits that to the fitness regime implemented by Coach Smithwick. “He makes it hard, he’s nearly 50 years old and still is at the front of the running group. He forces you to push that little bit harder every session,” Jones said.
The Kangaroos train every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:45pm at Kele Park. All new players whether experienced or inexperienced are encouraged to come along and have a kick!!
