A couple of our lads played for Capricornia in the 12yrs Schoolboy Champs in Toowoomba recently, Tom Hutchieson (U11) and Caylen Dunne (U13). Well done, to both boys.
Thanks to Ian Hutchieson for this great wrap-up of the weekend:-
Two of our Brothers Roos boys were selected to play for Capricornia at the State Championships in Toowoomba. Caylen Dunne (u. 13) and Tom Hutchieson (u.11) did the club proud in a very high standard competition.
From an under 11 perspective, it was brilliant that Tom made the Capricornia side given he was playing against boys with much more experience and age. The boys were brilliantly coached by Mr Mal McArthur and no doubt they soaked up his massive experience as a coach and manager of young boys / men.
Capricornia performed the best it has for over a decade. For the past few years they would win one of their five pool games. But this year they won the first four games and were beaten by a very skilled and well drilled Northern (Cairns Team) in the final.
The boys were a little disappointed to not be holding the Country Trophy and having a medal around their neck, but not for long. All the first four games were very even and strongly contested games.
Capricornia played their hearts out and did what there coach asked of them, and the games were entertaining and saw many changes of the lead. A measure of how good the country teams were this year, is that the normal one or two country boys who get picked for the state team, was this year five or six. Brody Morris from Mackay was picked in the state team.
Tom's first time playing in the forwards resulted in his first grab 25 out and then slotted the goal. His next kick for goal on a 45, smashed into the post. Tom has always seen himself in the backs, but Mr McArthur wanted to try him in the forwards. Tom soon worked out, that the coach is pretty smart and that he will no doubt have a great time working out where he belongs in his footy team. Hutcho – you may yet be a forward!
