INGLEWOOD INKLINGS
Well our first game is done and dusted and although the results didn’t go our way against Newbridge, there were enough positive signs to keep the Inglewood faithful optimistic about our 2013 prospects.
The Under 17s managed to get 20 players on the park which is a credit to Lethal and the club. Unfortunately the boys were outmatched by Newbridge, going down by 50 points. Our young blues will need to adjust to the new rule of no boundary umpires, by using the centre corridor more. Liam Collins was impressive in his first match for the club, and along with Braydon Welsh, skipper Falcon Monaghan, T. Giri, Joel Roberts and Nick Leach were the best for the blues. Stick together boys and the wins will come!
Speaking of the new rule, we will pass the hat around next match in aid of Mick who thanks to this bright idea now finds himself out of employment!
The blues twos started competitively against last year’s finalists, but the maroons steadily increased the lead throughout the game. Little skill errors proved costly, but the upside is there is plenty of improvement to come from the boys. Best players were big Elliot Roberts, Duey Connally, Butch Matthews, Mighty Mal McLean, Tipper Hartney and Jay-dog McCarroll.
The seniors came out with high expectations, and signs were good in an even first quarter. Unfortunately the boys were unable to put scoreboard pressure on Newbridge, and after the blues scored 7 straight behinds, last years runners-up took full advantage and the lead blew out to 35 points at half-time. Our boys never recovered from here, being unable to break the defensive zone of Newbridge, the final margin standing at 75 points. Despite not being the result we were looking for, it is a 90 point turnaround from our last encounter against Newbridge, and with steady improvement we should a closer result next time around. Doing the maths on last season, if we have that sort of turnaround every game, it sees us with 7 wins and knocking on the door of finals!
Best players were Captain Pat Hartney, Tribal Douthie, Rees May, big Jacko Hart, the Number 2 Stevenson and Stickers Kirby (4 goals).
Calivil United this week, wins against the Demons have been few and far between in recent times. Fair to say we owe them in all three grades. Let’s kick-start 2013 with some strong performances on home soil.
Carn the Blues!
SOCIAL NEWS
A fantastic night was had at the Op-Shop Ball after the game on Saturday. Some interesting kits getting around, many not really befitting the ball theme, or even fitting the people wearing them. Of course, cousins Jack Smith and Josh Matthews were quick to jump on the slightest opportunity to wear a dress. You did your family proud, boys! Best dressed went to Ronnie Heenan and Jess Lees. Thanks to Kristy and the Social Crew for putting on a great night.
After today’s match there will be a meal at the clubrooms followed by the Players Auction. Make sure we stick around and take the opportunity of making some cash by buying one of the 20 Lots available.
BLAST FROM THE PAST
It is 140 years since the first mention of football being played in Inglewood in 1873, when scratch matches were played between members of the ‘Inglewood Cricket & Football Club.’
However, it was 1876 when games began to be played against neighbouring clubs, and football really became popular in Inglewood.
The first competitive match was played against the Korong (Wedderburn) Club as an exhibition match for the Wedderburn Queen’s Birthday Fete in aid of the Inglewood Hospital. The match went for two hours and finished without a decisive victory being proclaimed. The general impression was that while Inglewood exhibited superior skill, Wedderburn had the advantage greater physical power.
This match greatly increased the interest in football, and the Inglewood Football Club was officially formed a week later on June 1st, 1876, at a meeting held at the Empire State Hotel. W J Earle was elected the inaugural Captain. Further matches were played that season against Wedderburn and Serpentine. A second team of Inglewood ‘amateurs’ was also formed, labelling themselves the ‘Bothumpians’.
Some of the standout Inglewood players from this era included J M Davies, J Craig and the Tatchell brothers, William and George.
