Scotty played 16 games for Avoca in that season and kicked 96 goals to win the Lexton League goal kicking award. He was fourth in our club Best & Fairest to Jim Jess, Terry Smith and Gary Wardlaw.
He certainly excited our supporter base when he kicked 9 goals in his first two games for the season and seven in round three. 25 goals in three games and many more was to come as the season progressed. He was a goal kicking machine and goaled in every game he played for the season. Including 11 goals in round 7 and 16 goals in Round 14.
Scotty’s presence against Natte-Bealiba in the second semi final was a key part of our success and it is ironic that he nearly did not play in that game as the final was played at Marnoo, and Malcolm had coaching commitments with a junior team in Ballarat in the morning, and the time factor was against him of making it to Marnoo in time.
The club flew Malcolm from Ballarat airport to Marnoo to make the game. The plane landed on a straight stretch of road just of town, where a car was waiting, and he took the field at quarter time and his five goals were enough to give the Bulldogs victory and entry to the Grand Final.
Scotty kicked four goals in the Grand Final and handed off many more despite needing just four more goals to kick the century for the season. His selfless play was a key factor in our victory.
Scotty also played in the Lexton League team that defeated Maryborough Castlemaine DFL by 92 points. Alongside other Avoca reps, Coach Jim Jess, Chris Brennan, Terry Smith, Les Brennan and Mick Wardlaw.
Apart from being a great footballer he was also well loved by all off the field, he came up from Ballarat with a couple of mates and played for Avoca for the love of it, and did not accept one cent to play for our club and helped us win a premiership in doing so.
He left many great memories behind for those of us that were around at that time.
R.I.P Malcolm Scott.
