Preliminary Final Dunolly 10-16 -76 defeated Maldon 9-16-70
One of the biggest crowds at Campbell’s Creek for many years saw Dunolly and Maldon turn on a thriller in the preliminary final. Dunolly after trailing by 20 points at the last change, staged a brilliant recovery to snatch victory in the time on period.
1st Quarter It was evident soon after play started that the short ground (three kicks from goal to goal) did not suit either side. The defences controlled the early play and it was some time before Dunolly broke through to score a single. J. Hickey scored Dunolly’s first goal from a snap. Maldon gave away far too many free kicks by manhandling.
Loftus showed up well and combined well with Pendlebury and J. Baxter but the latter’s kick was off target. Deason cleared a Maldon move and then Lacey chipped to score Dunolly’s second goal and Coleman quickly followed with another. Dunolly was attacking persistently but they couldn’t break Maldon’s defence. With J. Baxter on the ball, Maldon worked the ball forward through J. Lee and from a free J. Richardson scored Maldon’s first goal and soon after a second. Richardson was doing well at full forward and he kicked Maldon’s third.
2nd Quarter Pendlebury the tall Maldon ruckman was giving Dunolly a headache in the air and the ball was purposely being directed away from him. Richardson had 2 chances to goal for Maldon but he missed. Dunolly defenders Gordon and R. Howard were playing well under constant pressure. For Maldon Sharp (centre) and Lee (ruck) were prominent.
Coleman got Dunolly’s fourth but Loftus giving Maldon a fine game on the wing replied. Lanfranchi kept up the scoring rate up with a goal.
3rd Quarter Dunolly had chances early but only one goal was scored by Coleman but that was answered by D. Lillie. Dunolly then kicked a string of points. Maldon hit back as J. Lee, Sharp and Baxter combined well with Beach kicking a goal. Further goals came from D. Lillie and J. Lee. Dunolly was worried and moved Coleman to CHF.
4th Quarter Maldon was holding Dunolly well and appeared all set for victory with only about 8 minutes to play. Then the Dunolly skipper cleverly weaved his way clear and scored a fine goal from the boundary line. The ball was bounced and M. Watts found the brilliant Lacey for another goal and now only 8 points separated the teams. Coleman was swung into the ruck and he passed to Lacey which resulted in a single. Gordon kept Maldon out, delivered to Lacey who passed to Deledio who goaled. J. Lee had a chance for Maldon but his kick fell short and R. Howard pulled down a brilliant mark in the pack to save. Play was quickly transferred through Coleman and Lacey and Deledio snapped full points from a scrimmage in front just before the final bell.
After the final siren, Dunolly supporters swarmed onto the ground and carried Lacey shoulder high off the ground.

Dunolly, Creek in thrilling Grand Final Draw
Dunolly 12 . 11 . 83 Campbell’s Creek 11 . 17 . 83
Creek winning the toss elected to kick with the wind. Adams won a free and put them into attack but a fine clearing dash by Walsh eased the situation. Thompson of Creek posted the first score of the day a point. Lacey grabbed the ball and passed to Coleman but he missed a sitter. Dunolly was paying too much attention to the man and was paying the penalty. M. Watts of Dunolly hadn’t been sighted whereas Phillips was like pepper and salt in everything for Creek. Langdon kicked a magnificent goal for Creek. Sleep passed to R. Paull but his pass was intercepted by Lacey who kicked to Taylor who kicked a great drop kick goal.
Creek was taking charge as Sheen raced in for a goal. Wimpy Taylor was in complete control in the ruck but his rovers weren’t sighted. A move by M. Watts looked promising but Hickey could only add a single.
2nd Quarter A quick free to A. Deason to Britten to Deledio was worthy of more than a point. From a throw in Hickey passed to Lacey and a goal resulted. Determined to start the rattle, J. Deason pounced on the ball, stabbed it to Deledio who made no mistake. Creek rallied found Walsh impassable. A nasty incident resulted in Adamson being felled and he was in the hands of the Creek trainers. M. Watts kicked to Lacey who missed and then Adamson took 3 good marks but the Creek attacks were repulsed. Coleman drove the ball to Lacey who goaled. The game was getting very willing.
Watts to Polinelli to Lacey a goal and Dunolly was only 2 points behind. Twice Ramm marked but the Creek boys steadied. Wybar of Creek was dropped and the umpire spoke to a Dunolly player.
Coleman, Lacey and Taylor were doing well for Dunolly as was Dickson, Adamson and K. Lynch for Creek. Coleman pulled down a gem and passed to Lacey who goaled. Then Hickey sent a sizzler to Deledio and the veteran kicked the leather off the ball and Dunolly were 10 points in front. Dunolly added 5 goals 3 to 5 points and looked the likely winners.
3rd Quarter This had to be Creek’s quarter as they had the wind. K. Lynch and Langdon both kicked points for Creek. Creek attacked but K. Howard kept them out. Then M. Watts came into the game and passed to the big fellow Deledio who goaled. A feature of the game at this stage was the good kicking in of both full backs. G. Watts was busy on the wing and placed Deledio in passion for another goal. A free to Coleman who passed to Taylor but Phillips flew to take mark of the day. Britten secured on the wing but could not find M. Watts. Coleman picked up and kicked to Lanfranchi who played strongly to drop kick a beautiful angle goal. Creek were in more trouble than Flash Gordon as R. Howard cleared and passed to M. Watts but the mark was not allowed.
After Dickson was dropped a free kick down field to E. Lynch resulted in a goal for Creek. This was the third time for the quarter that Dickson had “copped one.” It seemed to fire Dickson up because he took 4 good marks but his field kicking was terrible. Watts sent the ball forward and a free to Deledio resulted in a goal. Creek attacked but R. Howard was too good and he passed to Walsh on to M. Watts to Deledio goal. E. Lynch with a left foot snap goal lifted Creek’s spirits. A chain of passes by Howard, A. Deason Coleman and Britten put Dunolly into attack but Curnow snuffed it out. Creek’s 4 goals 5 to 5 goals 1 with the wind was not good enough and being 12 points down put them in a bad spot.
4th Quarter A brilliant burst through Williams, Dickson and Thompson followed by a spectacular goal by Sheen and only a goal the difference. Coleman was on the backline. A free gave Thompson a chance but J. Deason cleared. A free to M. Watts and Dunolly were heading for goal but K. Lynch who passed to Phillips to E. Lynch was worthy of the goal it caused. Creek were a point ahead but Lacey leveled the scores.
K. Stevens, Sleep and Williams were starring for Creek. Coleman, M. Watts and Britten were going well for Dunolly. From a scrimmage Taylor scored a point and when Deledio kicked a goal after a free , there was only 4 minutes left. Langdon after a foolish hand pass picked up the rebound and sent Creek forward but Coleman relieved. His kick was a poor one, K. Stevens secured, passed to E. Lynch on to Langdon to K. Stevens for a magnificent goal. – level
The crowd was on its toes , a minute to go. First Dunolly attacked, Taylor fumbled, Lacey tried to pick it up but the brilliant Phillips booted to Sheen, he fumbled and Langdon had a shot which went across the goals. The siren sounded and the players stayed on the field as the goal umpires checked their cards. Creek added 3 . 3 to 1 . 4. against the wind.

Dunolly 13 . 9 . 87 defeated Campbell’s Creek 10 . 6 . 66
1st Quarter Lacey won the toss and took first use of the breeze. Creek lined up as usual but the crowd buzzed as Lacey was seen in the centre, Watts in a forward pocket and Coleman was on a flank. The first bounce saw Taylor and Thompson go for the ball and Whimpy’s big punch was grabbed by Creek’s Lynch had them into attack. Scrambly play enabled K. Howard to tear through and clear for Dunolly, Lacey drove the ball to Coleman who pulled down a beauty. Deledio raced from the pocket and brought cheers from Dunolly supporters with the first goal. Taylor again got the tap but it was sharked by Creek which resulted in a single. J. Hickey drove Dunolly forward but Sleep defended well. Dunolly were in attack al the time but only scored one single to M. Watts.
Dickson kicked the first goal for Creek but quickly Lacey passed to Hickey to Watts and Dunolly’s second goal was on the board. Howard repelled a Creek thrust. Polinelli, freed got the ball to Taylor for a single. Taylor shining in the ruck marked the kick in by Sleep and booted another single. Curnow was strong in defence for Creek but Lacey could not be kept out as he ran in with a long drop kick for another goal. Sleep checked another Coleman and Watts move, but Britten sent down the wing to Deledio and he got his second goal.
Gordon and McKenzie were in everything for Dunolly and helped Polinelli add another single. Good work by Hickey enabled Lacey to run in for another goal. A free to Eddie Lynch gave Creek their second goal on the siren.
2nd Quarter Dunolly were quickly into attack and singles came to Lanfranchi, Coleman, Polinelli and Deledio. A clash occurred on the Creek forward line and Dickson reeled from the fray. He took a free but only managed a point. Archer marked the kick in and raised both flags. Fierce and poor play became the order of the day as tempers frayed.
Taylor kicked to Deledio whose kick was never in doubt. Both teams were now playing systematic and purposeful football. Dickson gathered the ball on the lake flank and balking three defenders put Creek in front for the first time.
3rd Quarter Dunolly quickly attacked through Polinelli and Britten but Phillips cleared. Lanfranchi sent the ball in but Stevens cleared. Suddenly Creek swept the ball forward Langdon to Archer and his goal put Creek further ahead. The stiffening wind was in Dunolly’s favour. A goal to Deledio put Dunolly back in the picture. Ramm passed to Deason and his goal put Dunolly 3 points up. Play became scrambly but Taylor’s goal just before the siren sounded saw Dunolly 14 points in front.
4th Quarter Creek failed to make good use of the wind. Ramm got the ball down to Deledio he failed to score. A good goal by Coleman seemed to put Dunolly in the box seat. A free for an offence up field gave Deledio his seventh goal. Dickson added a goal for Creek but Dunolly packed the defence and Creek didn’t look like scoring. Time ran out with Dunolly clear winners by 21 points.
